Great suggestions everyone, thanks! It looks like that list I found is pretty much right on. I think Brave New World is next for me.

I like the sorta futuristic, post armagedon type stuff. Riddley Walker I thought was especially interesting. And of course, 1984. The one I'm currently reading, The Quiet War by Paul McAuley is my first excursion into a real spacey sci-fi type book. So far it's been really slow, and I may actually put it down in favor of something else.

Looks like I have some reading to do. I'm trying to watch less crap TV and read more. Well, except for Kings games, which lately has definitely been crap TV.

I tried Peter F. Hamilton. I really, really did. The dude's style should be right up my alley.

    I read The Reality Dysfunction.

I hated it. Absolutely loathed it, actually.

A great post apocalyptic novel, although it was horrible movie, is The Postman by David Brin.

A second classic of that genre from past decades is Tom O'Bedlam by Robert Silverberg.

Any of you guys do any writing in this genre?? Anyone ever published Anyang? I've got a couple concepts and short story ideas in my head, but damned if I don't suck at creative writing techniques.

I write for audio magazines but sustaining creativity for a novel is way beyond my pay grade.

Same. I think. I know I can write technical pubs (I've written quite a few training manuals in my day) and non-fiction. But gathering the thoughts necessary to form an interesting cast of characters, a unique setting, and a plot that drags the reader in is definitely going to be a challenge.

But as I said, I've got a couple sci-fi short story ideas in my head...along with a couple children's book ideas. I have no idea whether or not I'll ever get them down on paper, though.

Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro - one of my all-time favorite novels and also voted best novel of 2005 by Time Magazine. There's no aliens or space battle stuff but it definitely falls in the sci-fi category and I highly, highly recommend it.

Just don't mix them up, you could seriously scar some kids if an alien comes out of the jack-in-a-box and starts killing people.
