Default Recommend me some Sci-Fi books

I've been getting into Sci-Fi books lately, but I'm not really familiar with any particular authors or series'. Some that I've read in the last few years and really enjoyed are:

    A Clockwork Orange- Anthony Burgess
    Riddley Walker- Russel Hoban
    Fahrenheit 451- Ray Bradbury
    Frankenstein- Mary Shelley
    1984- George Orwell
The Quiet War- Paul McAuley (currently reading; sorta slow so far)

    In my queue are:
    Brave New World- Aldous Huxley
    The Martian Chronicles- Ray Bradbury

I found this site and it's been helpful, but I'd like to hear what some of you would suggest.

    Thanks!

Anything by Asimov. Richard Matheson is also an author to read.

    Good picks from gescom !!!

I would throw in Enders Game by Orson Scott Card and the books that follow it.

Arthur C Clarke's 2001: A Space Odyssey and following books are good.

William Gibson's Neuromancer the classic cyber punk book.

And one of my personal favorits : Kurt Vonnegut's Slaughterhouse Five

Im happy that there are some readers here on LGK

at the draft party a couple of years ago, and under a considerable haze, i heard Birdman yell out the following (about 4 or 5 times, i think) - "don't marry yourselves to players!" he went on to reiterate that idea more than once on the boards, and i believe it to be absolutely sage.

What's your preference, Doc? There are many genres within the category.

Dan Simmons is one of my favorite authors. Hyperion is outstanding as are the other 3 novels in that series.

Neal Asher is about as good as it gets in more contemporary space operas. He has created a rather amazing universe. Check out The Skinner.

Neal Stephenson's first novel is called Zodiac and he just got better from there with Snow Crash and Diamond Age. His next 4 novels digressed from sci-fi into revised history but the man writes beautiful prose. Anathem went back to Sci-fi and I absolutely loved it.

I have lots more if you enjoy this literary realm.

Anything by Bradbury, short stories especially. In my opinion he is one of the best American authors of all time, regardless of genre.
Anything by Stanislaw Lem. Solaris is probably his most famous work.
    Childhood's End, Arthur C. Clarke
Philip K. Dick, the author of the short story "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?" on which Blade Runner was based. Again, pretty much anything he wrote.

Never read much science fiction but I thoroughly enjoyed Phillip Jose Farmer's Riverworld series back in the seventies...especially the first two books (To Your Scattered Bodies Go and The Fabulous Riverboat).
