Keanu Reeves and ’47 Ronin’ search for ‘honor, revenge and impossible love’ | Hero Complex – Los Angeles Times

Japanese kids grow up with this story told to them. They hear it from family and they learn it in school, it’s part of the culture. It’s been made into movies many times and on television. It’s like our westerns, the story keeps being told. It’s been reworked in some ways [for this new film] but with great care and respect
Because I'm stupid, I'm still hoping this doesn't blow.

NOW Is the Akira Movie Dead? | BeyondHollywood.com

According to Deadline, Albert Hughes, who has been attached to the movie for a few years now, and who has been talking it up something fierce, has now left the project.

Ugh...do I have to get up on a friggin soapbox again? Yes, there are exceptions to the rule as far as remakes go. EXCEPTIONS. The RULE is that the majority of the remakes SUCK, because some movies capture 'justtherightmoment' and can never be duplicated, especially because the motivation for these RETREADS is to bilk a young movie audience and hope that the original fans will go with crossed fingers fully expecting to have their memories shat on. Some retreads...SUFFICE...cause they at least try to please fans of the original while introducing the movie to a new audience. And a rare few EXCEL, because they are either based on obscure/old movies and CREATED by folks who have reverence for the source while trying to ADD new elements and insomesmallway make the movie something entirely different. That's it. In a nutshell. If you were to take an average, most would fall into the SUCK(70%), SUFFICE would hit (24%) and the rarified air of EXCEL (6%). And I am being generous. So, you guys are willing to wade through those numbers for the rare gem?

****...I guess I am too. For every Sorority Row/Nightmare on Elm Street etc...it's worth it for Dawn of the Dead/The Fly/The Thing, etc. But it's goddamned depressing.

i think a real interesting case study is to take the three takes on The Island of Dr. Moreau...

the story-telling in many ways gets better with each version, yet the film in and of itself gets lousier and lousier... to the point that only the 1933 version (Island of Lost Souls) with Charles Laughton and Bela Lugosi is the only one i find myself being able to watch anymore... and it's the loosest one.

that latter point also opens itself to a whole 'nother argument about adapting books altogether, and how many of these attempts to draw closer to the source material end up being a real joke... like the whole Chocolate Factory nightmare.

they can't all be To Kill a Mockingbird. actually, they can't all be even remotely close to To Kill a Mockingbird.
