See that's exactly what I don't want, another Star Trek: Generations. When did those hand-offs ever work? Make some great Star Wars movies that can stand on their own, the less direct ties it has with the original trilogy the more likely it is to be something original and good. I don't want to see an old Han Solo sigh and become frustrated at some brash character that is essentially a young version of himself (you just know they're dying to do this tired cliché again).

They're trying to appease fans but they'll end up angering them.

I agree. The Star Wars universe is wide enough to do all kinds of stories without touching the original characters.

Star Wars Sequel Novelist Timothy Zahn Discusses The Upcoming Movies | Bleeding Cool Comic Book, Movies and TV News and Rumors

The original idea as I understood it – and Lucas changes his mind off and on, so it may not be what he’s thinking right now – but it was going to be three generations. You’d have the original trilogy, then go back to Luke’s father and find out what happened to him [in the prequels], and if there was another 7th, 8th, or 9th film, it would be Luke’s children. The Thrawn Trilogy really would have fit into the gap.
Seems like the right way to go, as far as it being about the Skywalker children.

Dunno it made a lot more sense to start following Leia's and Han's children since that was all bundled up. Then again now its disney so having the non existent mother falls right into their niche.
