No. The prequels would have been more like the originals if Lucas had used better directors instead of himself. The prequels had everything going for it: better actors, better story etc. The (very) weak link was Lucas' directing ability which was exceedingly poor. If they could have had Irving Kershner or some of the people that'll end up doing these new movies the prequels would have better a LOT better.

This is a guy who wouldn't do Star Trek 2 unless he was able to move off the intended date by like a year.
The nice part of that is Lawrence Kasdan is now consulting. Let him tinker away.

so honestly i have about I dont know 20 or so books from when they released the new stories of which only the Zahn books held any re readability. If I decide to delve back into them is anything worthwhile to imagining this new world?

The author was the same guy who "ghost wrote" the first SW novelization. It said GL wrote it but he didn't....but it was actually Foster. It was OK but isn't applicable as it is based on the characters just after the first movie.

I'm not sure what they are going to do with the new movies but Zahn's novels could be used but they are limited. I certainly hope they don't use some of those other novels...they are mostly crap....the ones I actually read anyway.

    And to Doc: Yep

Everything I've read so far has indicated that they won't be using any of the novelizations that are out there. We'll see if they draw any "inspiration" from them or not though.
