Yet he straddled the line too much and never really distinguished this as anything more than a half baked movie.
Well I'd say this is actually two movies.

The first movie is about the kids and the second movie is about the monster.

BOTH movies start out really strong I thought... but sadly... both movies end insanely stupidly, insultingly and completely forgettably.

So I'm with Dave... even tho there were parts of the movie that I quite enjoyed...

    **** that piece of crap.

Overall I liked it. I actually preferred the human story to the monster one though it did kind of remind me of Signs.

The lens flares were definitely overused. It works for a movie like Star Trek. Not for this.

Well that's just not true. I went into it with low expectations and was pleasantly surprised.

It was a compliment Kingsqueen was so mad at me as I was muttering while walking out of the theater. She was incredulous that it bothered me so much.

I went in with high expectations, knowing nothing of the movie other than having watched a trailer of it once and seeing a high IMDB score. I was very much disappointed. It could have been good, I mean the potential was there, but it just fell flat. It felt like a kids movie at times, which is fine, but then there are a couple of gory scenes that are very much out of place. And while there are some "bad guys", there is no real memorable villain and the movie suffers for it. But the biggest failure of this movie is the ending. A great ending could have totally saved Super 8 but instead it just cemented its mediocrity.

That's what ultimately did the movie in. They never really decided what kind of movie they wanted to make. Abrams was more interested in making a love letter to Spielberg but he just couldn't juggle the schmaltz with the underlying terror like Spielberg used to be able to do. The 'creature' was a perfect example of this. Never really that scary or sympathetic. If you make a monster movie you have to make your monster more interesting(monsters are the most innnnnnteresting...). This movie just straddled the fence way too much. And yeah, that ending was insulting on so many levels.

Nice Bugs Bunny reference. Huge fan as well! "Spider Goulash"

    Bottomline:

    Inferior 8 blew chunks!
