A good friend of mine did quite a few commercials and films with Tony Scott, here is what he thought about him.

Some directors make you wanna sock 'em, others make you want to grab a Panaflex with a 10-1 on tall sticks and run up a mountain to get them a sunset shot. Tony Scott was definitely the latter. The Governor will be missed...

Tony Scott Did Not Have Brain Cancer: Now ABC Saying Its Claim "Appears In Doubt" - Deadline.com

Tony Scott’s widow Donna has told police that the famed filmmaker/TV producer did not have brain cancer, informed insiders tell Deadline. That makes erroneous this morning’s Good Morning America report that he “had inoperable brain cancer” and quoting “a source close to him”. The ABC claim was widely picked up by media outlets globally and all the Hollywood press (but not Deadline) as the reason why Scott committed suicide Sunday by jumping off a Los Angeles County bridge at 12:35 PM. Within half an hour ABC was backing off its story (see below).

Meanwhile, Lt Fred Corral with the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office tells Deadline that an autopsy was completed today on the 68-year-old Scott, but the cause of death was deferred pending toxicological and other tests. The results will take 4 to 8 weeks. The Coroner’s Office Craig Harvey also tells Deadline that his office is in possession of “part of a suicide note” found in Scott’s black Prius car found at the scene of the suicide. Harvey says “multiple” notes were found.The contents have not been made public. Harvey also said the Coroner’s Office will not be releasing any of that information at this time.

I get your point MB, his movies were eye candy more than brain...but they are not without merit. The aforementioned remake of Man on Fire is really good. And Enemy of the State is one of my JunkFoodMovie top tens. Not an Oscar winner but tremendously entertaining.

To be fair, I haven't seen Man on Fire. I've had this conversation with different people over the years, and every time "least favorite director" comes up, Scott was usually my answer, unless another Joel Schumaker stinker was out at the time. I was never a fan of that mid-80's to early 90's style of American action film making. I know a lot of us grew up at that time and a lot of those movies hold a special place in our childhood, but man that was an awful period. All fake, excessive, comically violent, bloated fluffy garbage - Richard Donner, Renny Harlin, those guys too. Just not my kinda thing.

Oh man...Harlin's Long Kiss Goodnight and Die Hard sequel are tops man...c'mon...And I think he made that 'terrific' Ford Fairlaine flick too.

I want the Criterion edition of The Last Boy Scout, which narrowly edges True Romance for the best Tony Scott film for me. As for Renny Harlin, Long Kiss Goodnight is a semi-guilty pleasure.
