The key words in the above are "service cancellation department." These days, even for the smallest problem, you have to call, give the operator a reason to escalate and/or send you to the cancellation department (this can be as simple as demanding to be cancelled as soon as you are denied your request, which you will be), and then you will be treated nicely. You also need to be prepared to actually cancel or back down if you don't get exactly what you want, but they will try to work with you at this point. They probably do this to not give away the farm unnecessarily and being able to not give anything to customers who will just give up after being told "no" once. That may be a smart practice, but it's annoying to me.
As far as the actual product, I think it's the best overall. Other companies may have one thing or another better than DirecTV, but I don't think anyone has a better overall package.
I will, add, however, that if it weren't for Kings games, Sunday Ticket, and a few other sports options (as well as the variety I need for work), I'd actually much rather have only free OTA reception and fill in with movies and shows from the Internets.
