Both these English authors have really mastered the Space Opera genre --- successfully combining hard science with a great story set on a vast galactic stage. Really good stuff.

Prince George: You know, Blackadder, for me socks are like sex. Lots of it about and I never seem to get any.
Read a couple of great books over the weekend
Got my first taste of Palahniuk. Loved both books. Just started this one last night:

DUDE. This series is freakin' epic. Not quite Lord of the Rings epic, but in the same vein. I've read almost everything SK has written, and many of his books are on my favorites list, but these books blow them all out of the water. Enjoy it.
I'm going through a Ken Follett kick. I've read Pillars of the Earth, World Without End, and A Dangerous Fortune recently.
All of those were period pieces (dark ages - Victorian era), but Whiteout is a Micheal Crichton-like book about a heist at a biotech firm. So it's safe to say that he has a very wide range. I'd recommend him to anyone; if you haven't read anything of his, look him up. There's bound to be a few in a genre that you like.
