Default 10/14 - New Apple laptops

For you folks in the market for an Apple laptop, wait until next week. Apple is hosting an event that will showcase their new laptop lineup. It's rumored that the entire lineup will be encased in aluminum with prices ranging as low as $800 to as high as $3100.

And now instead of emitting toxic fumes, it will emit the pleasant aroma of fresh baked chocolate chip cookies.
And thats how you get ants!

C'mon, CD. It's the Mac Pro's that are killing people.

The Macbook Pros only smell like chocolate chip cookies when you turn your MBP over, and throw some cookie dough on it.

In this economic climate, I cannot believe they've continued to price their "pro" models with limited specs:

    MacBook Pro Configurations

The new 15.4" LED backlit display MacBook Pros are 0.95" thick and weigh 5.5 lbs. Two models are offered:

    The $1999 model supplies a 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor with 3MB L2 Cache, 2GB 1066MHz DDR3 memory, both NVIDIA chips, 250GB hard drive, slot-loading SuperDrive, 802.11n, and Bluetooth 2.1.

The $2499 model has a 2.53GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor with 6MB L2 Cache, 2GB 1066MHz DDR3 memory, both NVIDIA chips, 250GB hard drive, slot-loading SuperDrive, 802.11n, and Bluetooth 2.1 This model can be upgraded to 2.8GHz.
Is a 3MB/proc of cache and a .13/Ghz per proc bump worth $500?!? Forget the elimination of Firewire 400. Yeah, yeah, yeah, I know FW800 is backwards compatible, and I can go and BUY an Express/34 FW 400 card, but having an 800 AND a 400 has it's advantages. (Oh, and they dropped FW completely from the Macbook line. BTW, $1299 for an entry level notebook?!?)

I think Jobs' medication and treatment is starting to effect his judgement.

Technically, the $999 MacBook is their entry level notebook. Regardless, I'm disappointed. The MacBook Air is a thorn, IMO, because it's not really necessary given the current state of the economy. A netbook, MacBook, and MacBook Pro would be a better lineup.

I'm waiting for MacWorld '09 before I jump to anything. The prices of these MacBooks HAVE to come down.

It'll be EOL by year's end, I bet. The reason they're still selling the old style is probably twofold:

1.) They probably still have a bunch of them due to most MB buyers paid the extra for the black model. (Morans.)

2.) There probably aren't enough LED panels to go around and keep the price somewhat sensible.

Two fold reasoning for keeping the "old" 17" Macbook Pro:

1.) There AREN'T any 17" LED panels, much less one that isn't going to blow up the price to over $4k.

    2.) Again, it's probably a stock issue.

They have to. For the first time, I'm seriously doubting Apple and their direction.

I'll stick with my current MBP which has firewire

The reason they left the FW inputs off the computer are because they want to encourage using external drives...
