Thread: 3 Questions for Techies; SmartPhone, Laptop, AntiVirus

I use Virgin Mobile as my carrier and looking at getting a virgin compatible smart phone. Any ideas on a good quality phone for a good price that will allow me to move into the 21st century?

And secondly- im still using my HP DV6 and love it. My parents are looking for a new computer and while my gut instinct tells me to recomend them a similar model of HP I always know before opening my trap on any computer matter the 1st thing to do is visit LGK.

And finally-is Kapersky better then AVG for a free anti virus program?

1. Don't know. Im telling everyone right now to get an iPhone if they want a smart phone.

2. HP DV6t or DV7t are nice laptops for the price. Dont forget to get that extended warranty!

3. I prefer AVG Free. Ive been using it for years, and its a great product.

I'm sure you'll hear a lot of good things about AVG but, I'm here to bitch abt them loud and clear. Just spent 260.00 having mine repaired due to a Trojan Horse virus that got thur my AVG program like chit thru a goose. This was the 2nd time I've had to take my pc in to have fixed due to viruses getting through AVG.
I'm now using McAfee and gladly paying for the service.
I'd been using AVG for yrs too. No more

Don't know why.
No 4G and Siri is a mostly useless data hog.

Love my 4G HTC Android.
Only problems I had was when I was first figuring it out and some of the programs use voice commands that actually work.

to say it succinctly, we're ****ed. it won't really matter what security you use, because your information can and will be compromised everywhere.

That's exactly what I was told. New viruses come out daily and so, programs are just unable to keep up with them all.
One way addy's get around are friends forwarding things to you and not backing out all other addy's on the e. Those things float all around the internet for all to see.

re: iPhone vs. Android - Battery life. Of all of the smart phones Ive used, the iPhone has the best battery life IMO.

AV - It doesn't matter which AV software you use, they all have holes. I like AVGs the best because its free, and if you run other Malware products, you can tend to keep your system clean.

I use Microsoft Security Essentials or whatever and it seems to work pretty get. It's catching things all the time.

I recommend Dell computers. For a laptop, get an Apple.

I prefer my iPhone over my Droid but both are great phones. Once I got a smartphone I didn't need XM Radio any more so that saves some $$.

Exactly. When fakealert viruses (the ones pretending to be virus detection software) started spreading, Symantec/Norton had no ability to detect or stop them. I read an article about how a lot of enterprise guys were really pissed because they were paying tens of thousands of dollars to Symantec for gateway protection and were still inundated. No program detects everything, at least not immediately. CD is right --you need a multi-tiered approach. Run your favorite anti virus software but also scan with other malware products like Malwarebytes.

Even better, reduce your risk of infection in the first place by keeping everything on your computer current. Keep your security patches up to date. Also consider that viruses often use exploits in older versions of Java and Flash. Make sure you have the latest versions of both. If you have had your computer a while, you may be running multiple versions of Java and not even know it. The latest Java installer won't uninstall some earlier versions. You have to do it yourself. You can go to the Java verification page and it will tell you if you have the latest version, and whether you may have an older version that should be manually removed. Link: Verify Java Version
