Default Add external hard drive for DirecTV DVR?

Has anyone augmented their DirecTV hard drive with an external hard drive to increase capacity? I've heard that it can be done but am not sure if it would be something simple enough that a caveman like myself can do it. I'd like to increase my capacity to be able to watch some games in the off-season next year. I'm not real tech proficient so plain language and a little how-to would be greatly appreciated.

Apparently all that you have to do is hook up a hard drive to the e-sata port on the back of your dvr. The problem is if you have any data on the internal hard drive you will lose it.
