Thread: Anybody have any experience with satellite phones?

At my company, we have a lot of sales guys that go to different countries. When the sales guys are in other countries they have to roam on whatever network is available. We end up with thousands of dollars in roaming charges a month. So I thought maybe satellite phones would be a cost saver. Does anybody have here have any practical experience with satellite phones? Any advice would be appreciated.

I am sure that they are really expensive, but why don't they just get a new phone or SIM card or however it works? I am guessing they can get one card for all of the EU.

It's not just EU, we do a lot of work in Nigeria, Indonesia, Malaysia, Taiwan, Vietnam, Philippines, Japan, Korea, and Australia. That and sometimes they are in remote locations were there aren't cell towers nearby. As for expensive, satellite phones start out at about $1000. But that is cheaper than the $1200 roaming fee we get everytime he is in Nigeria for a week(he goes there about 4-5 times a year). As a temporary measure he is going to buy a phone when he gets there next week and use that.
