Default Best/Cheapest Cell Phone and Plan

After close to 3 years my cell phones screen finally went caput....thus its time for a new phone and provider.

I know some providers offer unlimited text/data for $40 bucks per month but was curious as to who is the best provider and what are some decent phones. I could probably strongarm Verizon( my current carrier) but my cell coverage blows in my home so would prefer a change on the proviso I can get better reception.

I'm not necessarily looking for the cheapest myself but would be interested in some of the best deals. I've been with Verizon ever since they took over my LA Cellular service in '99. I was with LA Cellular since '96. I'm tired of Verizon nitpicking every single service option. I use a smartphone and it is required by Verzon to have a Data Plan with any smartphones. This plan costs an additional 29.99 to my regular talk/text plan. Well I don't use my phone for a lot of web surfing maybe because it is very slow. I would really prefer to have my phone tethered to my computer for internet access but this is an additional 29.99 from Verzon so it would cost me near $60.00 for Data and Internet access. That is unacceptable to me.

I would like to get the latest droid with a good Voice and Data plan that would include tethering to my computer for internet access.

Sprint is the cheapest against all other providers because they include everything and 400 minutes for $69.99 and nights start at 7pm. Verizon has the best coverage but the price is up there. Att......I have a hatred for them so I'm a little biased. I've loved my EVO since the day it first came out and normally I'm the first to use my free upgrades and I haven't found a reason to use it yet (except maybe for the EVO 3D).

I have Sprint too. Cheapest plan if you use data. If you are going with a dumb phone I'm not sure who has the best deal. Also check with your carrier to see if you can get an employer discount. I got 23% off a month for working at Ford and 11% off at my current workplace.

If you want free tethering you'll need to root an android phone or buy the pdanet app.

I've been with Virgin Mobile for almost a year. I have an LG Optimus Droid($200) phone and I pay $25/month for 300 minutes( I don't talk much on my cell) and unlimited web and text. My wife has the LG Rumor touch($100) and she pays $40/month for 1200 minutes and unlimited text and web. The coverage is great, and there is no contact!

There are ways to tether internet from your phone to your computer for free. One app is called easytether. You can have wifi tether for free, but you would need to root your phone.

Virgin pickybacks Sprints network if Im not mistaken. It has its moments in heavy traffic times but its been good overall. I use it as a second line and use the $25/300 minute unlimited text and data plan. They have a pretty good selection of phones now. Prepaid Cell Phone Service and Pay as You Go | Virgin Mobile

I just switched over from an iPhone 3G to an Optimus V on VM. So far, so good. Can't beat the price ($25/month plan). I'm still trying to get the hang of android.

UPDATE- so far so good with the virgin phone. Only downside is the pictures have a high fail rate when sending pics. Other then that...love having cell phone access at my own home.
