    Quite honestly, Bulletin Boards/Forums.

I grew up with it back during the AOL dial-up days when I got to use the internet on my uncle's computer for about 30 minutes a day. As silly as this may sound, I remember my first "TV spoiler" and I happy to spoil it because it made me feel smart. My parents had work when I was little so I had to go home with a neighbor every day after school for 1-2 hours until my dad could pick me up. My neighbor had a little brother who loved Barney & Friends. I remember reading on a forum somewhere that there would soon be a new character called "BJ", who would be Baby Bop's cousin.

I told my neighbor's brother and he didn't believe me. I'm sure you know how it goes. "You're lying!" and "Don't make stuff up!". A few weeks gone by and BJ still didn't make his debut. I felt kind of bad because I thought I was wrong until he finally showed up. The reaction I got from my neighbor and his brother was awesome. They kept asking me for more info regarding anything. And I tell ya, I read so much stuff on forums I was able to feed information to them.

I pretty much grew up posting on forums ever since I started using the internet. Today, LGK is a big part of my life. If I didn't have internet, I would go crazy not being able to read discussions online.

These days, the forums seem a little more quiet than usual, but that's probably because of Twitter, Facebook, etc... I see people make their own comments only to have 2-3 people reply to them. Honestly, what's the fun in that? While you don't have to deal with other morons and just have your little circle of friends discuss the things you like... I think they're missing out. The real action is on discussion boards where you potentially have hundreds of people read and discuss the subject.

While it seems like most of you are allergic to the "like" button, I just want to personally say thanks for looking anyway.

Since porn is not a choice, the poll title should be "what's the second best-thing on the internet?"

BBS are a great part of the internet. But only for those like us who enjoy taking the time to put our complete thoughts down via writing,
and maybe even do a little proofreading/rewriting to get it right, on certain important posts.

We, who enjoy doing that, are a special slice of society, IMO (if I may take a moment to give "our kind" a pat-on-the-back).

I find social media frustrating, with its encouragement of briefness (word limits, etc).

I seldom find myself able to express myself on a significant topic in less than 110 words, or letters,
or whatever the crap it is.

    BBS>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>social media

BBS involve at least some in-depth communication and developing one's thoughts.
There is a feeling of minds meeting, at least in the best threads.

Social Media, on the other hand, is more like just waving and smiling as you pass someone by on the freeway.

My 1st choice was, believe it or not, youtube.

I enjoy doing almost all of the stuff on the list.

But to me, it is youtube that has most fullfilled the "promise of the internet", in terms of international communication,
witnessing the previously-unseen, and sharing a universe of varied experiences.

It is on youtube where I can travel to any location on Earth, instantly, hear any kind of music, see any type of animal,
see a tsunami close-up, experience an earthquake, watch a timeless news or sports highlight, see any food item consumed on earth,
see the work of artists and creators from around the world and perhaps even give feedback to them.

I can see great accomplishments, witness monumental tragedy, experience history, and see the limits of human achievement,
    courage, creativity, and foolhardiness.

For me, more than anything else on the internet, youtube delivers-the-goods.

    I agree with Mel.

I've found several forums just on LGK where I've learned about many things that I wouldn't have thought about otherwise.

There are several places to find good discussions on both sides of an argument if you look hard enough.
