If you must get it now, then go with the Droid. I had a BB Pearl for a few years and just upgraded to the Droid Eris. I do not miss the BB one bit. My biggest reason for going to the Droid was the ability to view attachments (mainly pdf). The Pearl made them such poor quality that I could barely make them out when zooming in. This can be a problem when I am out on the road and do not have quick computer access. The attachments on the Eris are clear as day.
I do not like the sliding phones, so the Eris was an easy choice for me between the two Droids.
I was contemplating this same thing about a month ago. I went to the Verizon store and checked out both of them and decided to go with the Droid. The Droid is awesome. The battery doesn't last super long if you surf the web like I do. I did solve that by buying 2 multi media stations (one for home and one at work). If you buy the Droid and want to buy the multi-media station don't buy it at the Verizon store. I picked them up at Best Buy for $39.99 each (Verizon wanted $99.99 each).
Another note that Toothless made me think about. The charging cables for the Eris are different (the connector part) than the BB. But, the BB cables fit the Eris, somehow. I found out on accident, but it saved me a whole bunch of money by not needing to purchase mutiple cables.
You can also wait for the HTC Incredible. That's coming out for Verizon in a month or so.
I think the safe bet is waiting until Apple's iPhone announcement in June. By then, not only will the aforementioned phones that SBU and others have pointed be out, but the CDMA iPhone in 2010 rumor should be addressed. It's a perfect time for Jobs to reveal the 4th generation iPhone, iPhone OS 4.0, etc., and announce an iPhone for Verizon in time for the September release.

Don't wait too long though.......like computers there is always a newer better phone coming soon to phone store near you......
We are the Samurai, the warrior elite who protect and serve. Armed and armored from head to toe, masters of our personal weapons and bound by Honor, Duty, Loyalty, and Honesty. We walk the long path into the places society would prefer forgotten, and chase those demons that most would run from screaming in fear. We are the Samurai.
Thanks again for the replies now I get why I need to wait. New is always better and the $29 Eris deal is not really a good deal since the phone is essentially out of date.
Sux what's the word on T-Mobile is the service good in LA or no comparison to Verizon? They seem to have better deals.
