I looked at dell and HP but I haven't found a computer in the $1000 range that had a video card that was worth a ****, or had the option to upgrade to one.

Since people are recommending mobo brands, I'm going throw Asus into the ring, I have built 3 machines using their boards and they have been great.

High end gaming station? Don't build it:

at the draft party a couple of years ago, and under a considerable haze, i heard Birdman yell out the following (about 4 or 5 times, i think) - "don't marry yourselves to players!" he went on to reiterate that idea more than once on the boards, and i believe it to be absolutely sage.

I suggest going to PC Club. They pretty much custom build all of their machines and can recommend different hardware configuration to fit into your budget. They will also offer standard or custom warranties for anything they put together.

If you know what motherboard and processor you want, I recommend ordering from a site that does installation and testing of the cpu.

I generally have my CPU installed on the mobo before it gets shipped (costs 9 dollars), which saves me the headache of having to do that myself. I'm kind of a klutz. Sites like www.mwave.com can do that for you.

If you can't handle installing a CPU onto a mobo, then you shouldn't be building your own system.
