Default Cell Phone Plans: Prepaid vs. Postpaid

I was looking to set my son up with an economical cell phone plan. I was going to give him my old ATT iPhone 4s and set him up with a plan that gives him voice, text and data. I'm a little confused after comparing the the ATT postpaid (Mobile Share Value Plan) and prepaid (GoPhone) monthly plans. ATT offers a prepaid monthly plan that is $60 a month with unlimited talk and text plus 2GB of data. On the postpaid side, a similar plan would cost $80 (no contract and BYOP) or $95 (2-year agreement with a new subsidize phone). Plus the postpaid plans have additional taxes and fees.

Am I missing something here? Why would I want to pay $20 more for the postpaid plan over the prepaid plan? Is there a downside to prepaid I'm not seeing? I can see the advantage of shared data plans if you have a bunch of devices, but we are just looking for a cheap single-line plan for my son.

I'm hoping some of you cell phone gurus can lend some advice.

I think you can even go cheaper on tmobile. I think it's like 100 minutes total and "unlimited" text/data. The kids are all about the data now.

I think so. My understanding is you can use any ATT or unlocked iPhone now and they even allow LTE connections for devices that support it. I think I will stop by an ATT store tomorrow and see if I can get some answers.

Could be but I would have to find out if my ATT locked phone can operate on their network. There is also AIO Wireless which uses ATT's network and may even be owned by ATT.

The LA/OC/IE region had their 1900 refarmed so the phones should work once you unlock them. I bought a unlocked Galaxy Mega which doesn't have the 1700/2100 radios needed and I still get great speeds on T-Mobile.

Also you can take the iPhone to straight talk which uses ATT service starting at $45 unlimited everything or if you prepay multiple months in advance you can save even more.

I didn't really want to start a new thread over this but this seems like a good deal that AT&T has started.

AT&T cuts prices for wireless data plan customers - Yahoo Finance

In what the company called its "best-ever prices," AT&T said a family of four can get unlimited talk and text with 10GB of shared data for $160 (97.29 pounds) a month. The discounts are available to any customer, including small businesses with up to 10 lines, and customers of other carriers who switch to AT&T.
