No change to either the 1/2-3/4" black-band problem or jagged edges of characters.
I opened a tech support case w/ LG, and their response was:

I will gladly assist you with your inquiry. Actually, the HDMI is optimized on the AV equipment; however it might not support PC connection to HDMI.
Please try installing the monitor using different connections.
So, I tried a DVI cable, and .... viola. Both problems went away and the display is now as perfect as I could hope for. Kind of dissappointing that HDMI (which I thought was 'state of the art') is non-optimal, but it doesn't matter to me .... would if this monitor had built-in speakers and I were trying to minimize wiring from PC to display, but that's not the case.
