That's really interesting. I will see if I can replicate this issue tonight.Just to close the loop on this issue:
I use a resolution of 1920 x 1080 (native), the HDMI cable, and I have since
-- run Windows update (Windows 7)
-- loaded the drivers from the DVD that came with the LG2250
-- loaded the drivers that came with the ATI Radeon card
No change to either the 1/2-3/4" black-band problem or jagged edges of characters.
I opened a tech support case w/ LG, and their response was:
Thank you for contacting LG Electronics. I sincerely apologize for the inconvenience this situation might have caused you.
I will gladly assist you with your inquiry. Actually, the HDMI is optimized on the AV equipment; however it might not support PC connection to HDMI.
Please try installing the monitor using different connections.
So, I tried a DVI cable, and .... viola. Both problems went away and the display is now as perfect as I could hope for. Kind of dissappointing that HDMI (which I thought was 'state of the art') is non-optimal, but it doesn't matter to me .... would if this monitor had built-in speakers and I were trying to minimize wiring from PC to display, but that's not the case.
