Copying programs from DVR to Mac...

You need a video capture card to copy straight from the dvr. You have to replay the recorded show, & record on the computer.
There might be other ways, but this is the only one I know.

Aside from opening the box and installing the hard drive in your computer, (plus you need to be able to read a Linux file system) follow psychopuck's way. unfortunately this way has a big loss in quality.
The USB and Firewire ports are hardwired for a certain application and connecting to your computer is not one of them. they are meant for external drives and they are formatted in a way that only the DVR can read.
