There's a thread in Home Ice I have been posting in about DirecTV but figured I'd move my comments here since more appropriate.

I was desperate to get rid of my HR-23 (cannot stand this receiver) and upgrade to an HR-24. After agreeing to re-up for another 24 months, DirecTV agreed to send me an HR-24. Got the box today and.... they sent an HR-22. :( Full hour and a half on the phone with them just now and no resolution other than they can try again if I ship this one back. No way to guarantee an HR-24 will be sent. Argh. Calling Dish now.

If you read my posts above you would have avoided this problem. Call customer service back, tell them to send you a receiver return kit, then ask them to set up a service call to have a tech come and replace that receiver. They WILL NOT ship HR-24s from the warehouse to a customer, they are only sent to the install techs.

Thanks. Appreciate that. It's a $90 fee for the service call and I cannot get it waived. But at least it is an option.

Edit- looking at Amazon looks like I could own an HR24 for about $180? Man, not sure this is all worth it. Miss Dish hardware badly. But my building is wired for DirecTV and I have no balconey so may not be much I can do.

Make sure you would own that box. I think boxes purchased through directv from amazon are still subject to a lease fee.

Out of curiosity what is so awful about the 23? I have two of them that work without a problem. Could be faster but the guide update should solve that problem.

Thanks all for the input. lath19- to answer your question, have you ever used a Dish 722 or 922? That's... well that's my answer. Once you try those you really appreciate that from a hardware standpoint, DTV is not that awesome. Very good and superior in other areas.

Anyway, some good news. After a couple of days of sweet-talkin, I got my HR24 today at no charge. Gotta deal with sending back a few receivers but that's part of the game. Will get it hooked up and provide thoughts!

Follow up- I've had the HR24 hooked up for about 3 days now. No really big changes over the HR23 other than the one thing I needed to have fixed- it's fast! Fast as hell! Still not a fan of the overall UI but at least I can hop around in the menu and guide now with no lag. Well done, DTV.

The best way to get one is to have the tech come to your place and install the upgrade. When he arrives ask if the have any 24s on the truck. If you have them ship it you will receive a older one from the rancho warehouse.

    Phossy.
I have be having some issues with my R22, and I am pretty sure it needs to be replaced. So its a good thing I saw these tips on getting a R24 replacement, but doing a little research on my issue I came across the R34.

Does anyone know if that's available yet? Looks like it comes with a 1TB hard drive, 5 built-in tuners and the ability to have 3 remote session. Directv doesn't have it listed.

Hey Phossy, maybe you can ask your neighbor about this, please.
