DirecTV Boxes
Reading the DTV thread on home ice got me aware that I haven't been paying much attention about the new tech.
So I ask you experts:
I've fallen behind. I only have an HR21/700.
How much better is the HR24?
When are the TIVO and Slingbox versions due out?
Do I need to upgrade now or is newer one coming out soon?
How do I get it for free?
THX.

H25 is the smallest box for Directv. This box is an HD receiver but not a HD DVR. If you have flat screen tv's this box will fit behind the tv on the wall so you do not see it. Most of the techs are installing this box now and if they bring the larger box refuse it until they bring the H25 box.
The new RVU technology is supposed to come out in October and that will allow you to watch TV without the need for a box. There is a website for RVU. I am holding off until this technology comes out because I do not want to get locked in for two years and lose my leverage. Good luck.

The person next-door works for DTV and I have all HR-24s. They are a bit faster with the menu and the guide. Larger hard drive. If you do upgrade be aware you may not get a HR-24 as a replacement, they still have many HR 22/23s footing around in the refurb stock. The best way to get one is to have the tech come to your place and install the upgrade. When he arrives ask if the have any 24s on the truck. If you have them ship it you will receive a older one from the rancho warehouse.

I would, if they offer then to you as a free upgrade. Just make sure to have them send some one out to upgrade you and not have them shipped. No the current content (DVR Shows, Show List, Favs) will not be save and can not be transferred to the new receiver. If you have more then one room you want to have a DVR in, you can also look into the Whole Home DVR service.

I'm hoping they push out the HD GUI update soon. Supposedly will make the boxes run smoother. My 24's work ok but they could definitely be faster, especially using the media center functionality.

Phos Chek,
What comes out end of next month? New hardware? I have DirecTV coming out tomorrow to install a whole home DVR and new boxes. I'm getting it all for free (longtime customer), but if there's something new coming out, should I wait? Also is the HR24 the latest HD DVR?
