So I backed up all of my data, and then made the recovery disc (32 bit) that I found here: Download: Windows Vista x64 Recovery Disc — The NeoSmart Files
This loaded on startup:

Then I did the startup repair tool from this menu:

Restarted the computer, then I did the Memory Diagnostic Tool. It didn't find any problems.
Then I tried to reinstall Windowshttp://www.v6performance.net/gallery...08&ppuser=2540
Entered the code and kept getting this error:

Any idea why? It won't let me do the system restore or complete restore because I don't have any back-ups. Should I try to find another recovery disc somewhere online?
Will try this today. Should I still do it even though I ran the Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool and it came down without any errors?
Sony VAIO. I think they sell the discs for about $20.
Is this the RAM? It's pretty hard to take the cover off of the laptop. I don't want to crack anything. I did feel something shifting inside, but I think it's part of the monitor plastic hinge-thing that cracked a bit when it fell.

Yes. That is a laptop RAM stick.
Use that system recovery disk again and select Command Prompt.
Type in...
chkdsk c: /f
Let it run chkdsk and see if it finds any errors. You will need to get a Vista CD or restore disk and try a Windows repair. It may fix the problem, but Im still thinking there is a hardware issue, likely the hard drive.
Recheck what you are typing. It should be.....
chkdsk c: /f
this thread is cool
Fixed it! Downloaded Hiren's Boot CD to test the hard drive. The HD failed the test, so I bought a new HD from Fry's, installed Windows 7, and now it works! Thanks for the help guys.
