    Default Dropped my laptop...

Dropped it off the kitchen counter. Fell while it was playing a video. The video stopped/froze after a while, but it still played the sound. I couldn't exit, so I manually shut it off. Now whenever I turn it on this comes up:

Any idea of what to do/where to go?

Yea, that's what I think happened. I've just never taken a laptop apart, so I'm a bit nervous. Don't want to cause any more damage. I will try today though and see if that that fixes it. Thanks guys.

Same exact thing happened to me about 4 weeks ago. I had the same message on the screen, so I bought a new one. My laptop fell from the table though.

Also put the Disc into the DVD drive and reseat it. I have seen this when the drive gets interrupted and the system freaks out because the disc is not in the drive in addition to reseating everything.

Could also be a damaged hard drive. Those things are made to take an impact. If its a damaged hard drive, you can replace it yourself for pretty inexpensive if thats the only problem with the laptop.
And thats how you get ants!

There wasn't a disc in the drive at the time. I was watching a .mpg movie.

Is there a way to test if the drive is the only problem without buying a new one. I have an old laptop hard drive from my previous laptop, would I be able to just plug that in to test if that would fix it?

The easiest way to test the drive is this...

    1. Open up your laptop and pull out the hard drive. Who is the manufacturer of the drive? Fujitsu? Hitachi? Anyways, write down the manufacturer and model number.

    2. On another computer go to the manufacturer's website and look for their downloads section. There should be a download available to run a diagnostic on the hard drive. Download the program, which will likely want to burn to CD/DVD.

    3. Boot the computer with the CD/DVD you made and run the diagnostic. If it fails, it will give you an error code. Write it down. If the drives still under warranty you can call the manufacturer and have it replaced.

If the test passes, it also doesn't necessarily the drive is ok. Odds are its your HDD.

It's a Toshiba Hard Drive. I bought a SATA to USB enclosure yesterday from Fry's. Looks like all the data is still on there. I'm currently transferring my important files to another computer. Should I still check for a diagnostic to run the drive?

BTW, I took out the HD and put it back in, and when I tried to restart the laptop I got a new message:

I can't find the CD that came with the laptop. Not sure where I put it. Is there somewhere I can download a replacement?

    Thanks for the help!
