OK kids, I need some advice.

I DO NOT want to have to learn all this crap. I want a mostly automatic camera for my Newbie wife. I DO NOT want to have to show her how it works. I will send her to a class to learn the basics of photography if needed.

I want a decent body, 1 or 2 decent lenses, and freedom from having to be tech support while she's taking pics of the kids this summer while I'm at work.

Tell me what to buy. This is an early Birthday present.

She will plug it into her iMac, upload her photos, import them into iPhoto, and upload them from there to Facebook and Shutterfly.
at the draft party a couple of years ago, and under a considerable haze, i heard Birdman yell out the following (about 4 or 5 times, i think) - "don't marry yourselves to players!" he went on to reiterate that idea more than once on the boards, and i believe it to be absolutely sage.

This camera is great and you don't have to swap lenses or carry a huge piece of equipment. It'll even shoot HD video.

That's the thing, she's got a little like that one now, but has "Lense Envy" because all the other Moms have the cool one with the "Big Lense".

Begin jokes about my penis size now please.

This is the latest pro-sumer SLR by Canon I'm pretty sure. I have a 50D and it kicks ass.

Although, it looks like Nikon/Amazon has a deal that if you buy a camera you can get savings for buying an additional lens, might be the way to go.

Micro 4/3 is a good camera system that has interchangeable lenses and are smaller than DSLR's. Maybe a good option for a mom with kids as they're less bulky than DSLR's. This is a format created by Panasonic and Olympus. They get pretty good reviews.

both olympus and panasonic are supposed to be making announcements about new models this month. panasonic has been trending toward touchscreens since after i bought my GF1. olympus hopefully doesn't go that route.

Panasonic G3K coming out soon, I guess it has replaced the GF series. It looks a lot more modern but I do like the simple design of the GF bodies.

I might get a M 4/3 system one of these days but I'm pretty happy with my Canon DSLR and Canon P&S

Well, I geuss this is the best place to pose this question. I am looking to step up to a DSLR from a mid size camera (Sony Cybershot). I have had the Sony for about 5 years now and have been really happy with it. It is my first digital camera and is really easy to use, although I would have to say that I probably don't use it to its full potential, I don't even recall reading the manual. So with this next camera I really want something that I can dive into and learn the ins and outs about. Basically I want it for normal family use, this would include taking pictures of my kids baseball, gymnastics, cheerleading and other activities. The one that I think I need the help with is ice hockey. My son has been playing for four years and I don't have any good pictures of him beacause I just don't think my current camera can capture it. I have seen pictures from the other parents using their DSLR's and was very impressed. I am not looking to break the bank but realize I need to drop a descent amount for quality. I think I am in the $1,500 range, preferably less. Then I saw this post from RR and might look into it:

My only setback right now is lack of knowledge reagrding this subject. So any tips or suggestions would be great.

GF3 is supposed to be announced this month, but i hear it's even smaller than the GF2. that would make the lens mount bigger than the camera body itself, gross...

i do like the look of the G3 and the new 16mp sensor, but it's not enough to make me ditch the GF1 just yet. i'm hoping one of them will release a rangefinder style body with a built-in EVF.
