I started snapping and walking closer and closer and then got about 4 ft from him.

I'm thinking of getting a tripod. Any suggestions on one that is compatible with the Canon 1d Mark iii (heavy).

OK after reading a bunch of reviews I went for the Manfrotto tripod and since I have a $50 off coupon I went with the Manfrotto head for it. All the reviews are very positive and also say it's nice and tall for us tall boys.
Amazon.com: Manfrotto 055CXPRO3 Carbon Fiber 3 Section Tripod with Q90 Column and Magnesium Castings (Black): Camera
Amazon.com: Manfrotto 322RC2 Joystick Head Short: Camera & Photo
Can't wait to have a decent tripod.

I would be interested in how that head works out for you. I could use to update mine, never liked it much. Too difficult to use and make adjustments.
It looks like you got yourself a nice setup there.

I've got that very head for my tripod. You'll LOVE it. Holds VERY steady and has adjustable tension as well. It handles the D3+ the 400mm f/2.8, no sweat.
The only thing I'd suggest is that you may want to pick up an extra baseplate or two so you can have one on each body and your 70-200 f/2.8's mount.

I did the same thing with a blown out Nine Inch Nails pic and really liked the results.
