Actually, the people that used to run E3 left that group and started a new show called "E for All". It will be at the LA Convention Center this October, but they're still having a hard time getting the videogame companies to agree to spend money on the show and get a booth.
Basically, E3 as it was in the past would cost companies anywhere from $1 million to $15 million. We spent $3 million on our booth last year. The smaller companies couldn't compete and get the same exposure that the larger companies got, so they didn't get the same bang for their buck. The show was downsized to a more fiscally responsible show - we only spent $300,000 this year. But at the same time, it went from being a multi-faceted show (PR, Sales, Product Development) to a show solely about PR. None of the major retailers came to the show this year.
My boss is trying to get our CEO and other top Executives to agree to pay $100,000 or $150,000 to have a booth at E for All. Right now, the mindset is "no" - it's all about dollars and cents...
