    Default eBook Readers...

Since I got my first airline job over 11 years ago, I've found that I've become a voracious reader. It helps pass the time on the commute to and from work. I go for all kinds of stuff, from history to sci-fi to political thrillers. I read probably four or five books a month, depending upon their length. All this reading has caused me one big problem, however: I have simply run out of space on my bookshelf.

So after cleaning things out of my office and packing up almost 250 paperback and 100 hardcover books to donate to the library (TAX WRITEOFF - YEAAHHH!!), I've decided that I'm going to get an eBook reader. This will allow me to carry some rather large books with me on the road more easily, and will also cut down on the amount of clutter that builds up on my office floor.

Right now, it appears the industry standard is the Kindle from Amazon. I've played around a little bit with them, and I like them okay, but there's a slight drawback with it in that it really doesn't work .pdf files really well. ALL the manuals for work are in .pdf format nowadays, so having an eBook reader that will handle .pdf files properly is top on the list of needs. I also don't care for the DRM crap. When I buy a book, electronic or otherwise, it's mine, dammit, and I should be able to do what I please with it.

Sony's eBook reader is a P.O.S. I tried one out at a Border's recently and really didn't care much for it. Screen is too small and it just didn't feel good in my hands. It has the same problems properly displaying .pdf files, and that's a big NO for me. Besides that, the eBook availability on it isn't as great as Kindle's, from what I've read.

And now I've found out that Barnes & Noble are coming out with an eBook reader of their own, called Nook. It hasn't been released yet, but it looks to be a big step forward in eReader technology. Better OS, bigger capacity, expandability, Wi-Fi compatible, three times the eBook availability (1 mil via B&N and another 500k compatible eBooks from other sources), and it is supposed to flawlessly handle .pdf files. The only thing it doesn't do that the Kindle and the Sony do is handle word-processor-created docs.

So I'm thinking that the Nook is the one I want. I might hit the wife up for it for Christmas.

Does anyone else have any experience with eReaders? What models? What's your list of pros and cons?

My cousin works at Qualcomm and let me test drive the first Kindle before it was released. I wasn't impressed by the feel and speed. I've heard the second generations are superior to them in every sense. I've also played with the latest Sony reader ($300 model) and enjoyed little features such as a dictionary on the fly. It lacks wifi, but a wifi model is coming out soon.

Personally, I'm interested in the Nook. It has color, wifi, and a sharp looking screen. I'm considering purchasing one after the holidays or waiting out for Apple's tablet that is rumored to come out in early 2010.

I recently found out that libraries rent out eBooks for a 3 week period. My friend's Sony reader was able to download without any issue. I believe, though I could be wrong, that the Kindle does not read rental or Google eBooks data. That's important for poor folk like me!

The color display on the Nook is only the smaller touch-screen control below the reading screen. The reading screen itself is the same as the newest Kindle's, I've read.

The only drawback that I've been able to find about the Nook is that, even though it has a WiFi connection built in, it has no browser capability. That's just plain weak.

not my area of expertise by any stretch of the imagine. BUT was listening to a talk show about this over the weekend adn the one draw back seems to be they will only download copywrited materials. so the PDF issus is a big one for everyone.
ANother cool thing they were talking about is an iPhone app for a reader that will actually read the book to you

Why not get a small laptop and then you can do everything?

iPhone is too small, and a netbook is too big. A reader is jussssst right.

    Well...took the plunge and pre-ordered a Nook.

I'll review it on my blog in about a month when it arrives. If anyone's interested, I'll post a link here.

Please do, FBJ. I'm looking forward to your review.

Did your preorder make it for holiday cut? I read original preorders are full and anything ordered now won't be fulfilled until early January. I also read that local B&Ns will carry it in stock.
