Thread: Fu pc

I think many of us Mac owners have had our share of frustrations with Windows-operated PC's that we feel the need to vent when we make the switch. It may sound smug, but it isn't, it's just a relief not having to deal with our old, unstable computers.

It's funny. I must be the luckiest guy on earth. I don't get viruses, I don't get spyware, I don't have OS crashes, I reboot my computer only because I think I should after not having done it for 10 weeks on end, AND it's a windows machine. Been that way since like '95.

Oh, I also don't download everything that says free, I don't click on every pop up, I don't want to find out why my "PC is running slow" by running this scan. Wonder if the two are related.

...but, like I tell everyone, whatever works for you. If it's MAC, PC, or Linux, great.

My whole argument isn't about which OS or company is better it's just the smugness that people get when they jump from one ship to another. I like Apple/Android/Microsoft products. Trust me I'd be saying the same crap if someone started their post with FU Apple or FU Android.

Interesting. I can't remember the last time I ever needEd to use SQL or Access or why I would even want to, unless it had to do with my job.

To answer your question about why overspend? Because I like my mac better than I have liked any PC I have owned or used. While I certainly like the way they look, I also owns macs back when they looked like ****. I enjoy looking a free porn and downloading software, opening up attachments, etc, without having to worry about keeping my virus definitions current. I like not having to update my software every week or so. I like not having blue screens of death. I like using the free software it comes with (garage band, iMovie, etc) better than the Microsoft alternatives. I like having a computer made in 2003 still be my main computer, with nary a hiccup. I like being able to stay in OSX for most of the time, and firing up windows on the same machine for those few times that my work software requires it. All of that makes paying extra for a mac all worth it to me.

You are lucky. Downloading free apps and media can certainly raise your risk of getting a virus, but after a while Windows just gets screwy. My main problems have usually been after updating a service pack for Windows or my antivirus software. I usually wait until service pack issues have been resolved to download it, but there are usually still problems.

Seriously. The virus and os stability argument is about as weak as it gets. If you know enough about computers to check more than your aol email account neither one is an issue. I guess all those extra years using win 98 finally allowed quix to save up for his mac

I don't think I'm better than anyone. I will say that at least 90% of Apple haters have never owned an Apple computer in their life. I said the same crap about Mac until I was forced to use one at a company I worked for about 5 years ago. If you haven't used it, you don't know **** and your opinion doesn't mean jack.

By the way, I'm an IT director. One would think I know a thing or two about personal and business computing, eh?

I must be in that 10% well never owned one but I have used them and managed them on the networks as well for the last 8 years. And you're right a Kernel Panic is not a BSOD well it is a "Black" screen, so I guess a BSOD will still work and yes I have seen this happen on macs that are very heavily used with graphics. But that is understandable.

But seriously why would you spend $3000+ to surf the internet? I can't really defend Windows although Windows 7 is pretty rock solid. Personally I see "Most" Mac users as I am better than you because I own a superior product when it truly isn't. Match a MBP to an AlienWare laptop and you will not see any difference other than the OS. Match a Mac Pro to a Dell Workstation and you will get the same Hardware. Nothing is superior about the hardware. Personally I don't need a Gaming machine or a Dual Xeon 16GB RAM and 3 TB or hard drive space to surf the web, anyone that says they do is a fool, but then we all can spend our money as we see fit. Some people just buy into the marketing like sheep. The whole Apple marketing ploy is and always has been elitist and you know it.

But I can do everything you can do on your Mac just as stable and better since I have actual control over my entire system and can Actually change my OS if I choose to. oh yea and I can make it look like Mac interface too all for free, oh yea and all legally. and no Viruses or Spyware either. and yes I know you know all this because I know you also use Linux.

Mac (BSD UNIX), Windows or Linux (including unmolested BSD UNIX) is all a personal choice but I just have to laugh at some people for speaking without knowing what they really have.

Let me get two things straight here.

1. There's no reason to call someone a "smug" just because he's sick and tired of all the garbage he deals with Windows and switches to Mac.

2. My quarrel here is with Windows, not Linux. I adore Linux and use it probably more than Mac.

Anyone who uses a Mac and Windows on a daily basis should know the difference. There's no point in arguing.

It's just nice to not have to reboot just because I updated Skype.

It's nice not having to figure out whether you need to keep a shared DLL while uninstalling some software.

It's nice just drag and dropping stuff into my Applications folder and then dumping into Trash without having to worry about a registry.

It's nice that I don't need ridiculous hardware to run my system without it slowing down as soon as I open three tabs in Firefox.

It's nice not having to upgrade my machine every 2 years.

It's nice not paying a ridiculous amount of money for a piece of **** operating system which I need to register and can only install on one machine.

It's nice not having to worry about viruses and not installing anti-malware apps which eat up my resources ... especially during scans and updates.

I'm no ****ing smug. I've been a tech professional for over 14 years and this is my life. I feel like I can get my work done on my Mac without having to worry about all the crap I just mentioned. Sure, I've seen a KP here and there. Not NEARLY as much as I've seen in Windows. This is all from my personal and professional experience.

I gotta say, though. Thanks to Microsoft and its ****ty Windows platform, I got myself into the IT field as a little JR desktop support guy back in the 90's. I owe them at least that.

Now, as I was saying. Congrats to job on his new Mac.
