But you've already got a combo player and a wife.

Honestly, if your combo player takes a crap, are you going to buy another combo player?!? And HDMI ports are not an issue with the new receiver.

Buy an HD DVD player when it gets cheapo, and sock it away in the closet. If the wifey doesn't know what she's doing, shun her from touching the gear.

If that doesn't work, consider BadIdea's option.

    Lots of smiles there!!!!

Should my combo player die, will I buy a new one? Don't know. I do like the Reon, and I am not about ready to try the Realta on the Denon 3800. I'll cross that bridge when if I ever get there, and it would depend on a lot of factors, such as the size of my HDDVD collection when the combo player dies. I am going to jump on some HDDVD's during the firesales; movies that don't really take advantage of the extra capacity of BD.

I do have an A2 socked away in the closet. I am thinking of sending it to Lousiville when the kid gets his rental for next year (as well as all of my old gear that didn't survive the 2008 Upgraditis Flu).

    and as to BadIdea's idea..

Not "How much did this cost", or "Why do we need this", or "Well, if you're getting this, I am getting that.. ". In fact, the LC-2 was installed while she was in France, and upon her return she said "Oh, that's new".

I am now prepping here for the 2009 upgrade, when I ditch the 720p JVC for a plasma of some sort. Leaning Kuro, but who knows. I looked at some TV's today (not to buy) and I liked the plasma over LCD.

I am all setup for 1080p, except for the TV. I could sneak in a JVC 1080p D-ILA, if it was 52" inches and has the silver speakers.

    Blu-ray Reviews

They're severely straight shooters on all fronts: movie itself, picture quality, audio quality, extras, and HD exclusives.

This is where I go to see if I'm on the fence about getting a title on standard DVD or BR. I'm usually in agreement with their assessments of PQ and AQ. If I'm not in agreement, it's usually because they were too harsh/critical of something, which is good. I've never had an issue where they were wrong in a bad way and bought something of lesser quality than what they rated.

I don't know if dgrygan, NastiMarvasti*, or any of the other guys pay attention to High Def Digest's reviews, but I never buy a title without checking with them first. They review 99.8% of the domestic Blu-ray and HD DVD titles that are released.

*I'm sure NM and his co-workers check it out as they want to see what folks think about all of their hard work. So, he may have some other sites that could be of some use.

But for me, HDD is a one-stop shop: review and a forum of fellow BR lovers choke full of good talk.
You got it right. As far as high definition reviews and news goes, this site is second to none. They are always up to date with the news and their reviews are incredibly detailed as they dissect every aspect of the disc. I also check them out before I buy anything, hence why I haven't bought Bram Stoker's Dracula yet. In fact, I have this site bookmarked in my browser.

Edit: I've posted this site before but I thought I'd do it again. It's very detailed. Shows the specs of all Blu-ray and HD DVD's that have been released. Interesting to note that most Blu-ray titles are done with the AVC codec while most HD DVD's use VC-1. I'm pretty sure this is a disc space issue. Warner titles are mainly VC-1 so that both discs can fit them. Also, if you notice, the only time HD DVD uses AVC is with the 30gb discs. Blu-ray has them on both the 25 and 50gb. One thing to remember too is that Blu-ray supports a higher bit rate.

P.S. Look under Blu-ray statistics and HD DVD statistics to see what I'm talking about.

With it being a modern Sony classic, you'd think they'd put a little extra effort in this release. But then, there would be no need for a double dip.

A **** transfer is a **** transfer. Sony ****ed up The Fifth Element also, but remastered it later. This title? Not worth it.

Unfortunately, as cool as it is that Coppola is so involved, I've found the technical quality of Zoetrope's previous DVD releases to be a hit-or-miss affair -- for every great transfer like 'One from the Heart' or 'The Outsiders,' there are big-time disappointments like 'The Godfather Trilogy,' which I found shockingly poor in terms of video and audio. So I set my sights low going into 'Bram Stoker's Dracula,' and I'm sorry to say that even my meager expectations weren't exceeded.
It sounds like FFC involvement has plagued his standard def releases. Anyone that has The Godfather Trilogy on DVD knows it so-so at best. Obviously, Coppola doesn't have involvement in ALL Blu-ray releases (or HD DVD for that matter), so there are many other reasons that lead to bad transfers.

And for the sake of argument, there are plenty of catalog titles that look like crap on HD DVD, too.

HD DVD Reviews - PQ SORTED

    Blu-ray Reviews - PQ SORTED

Ironically, there are 22 titles reviewed of each format that had PQ below 3 stars. Considering there have been more BR titles released, that's a better ratio. Again, HDD hasn't reviewed ALL titles released.

Also, 6 of those 22 titles are shared on both formats. They both have **** PQ because they share the same encode, which may or may not be limited to HD DVD's limited disc capacity.

Maybe they should be giving these crappy looking titles to us. All of the transfers we've done have gotten 4/5 stars. Mind you, that department is still young.

HD DVD Review: Batman Begins | High-Def Digest

It has nothing to do with the disc storage. Look at this review for the measly 30G disc.

    4.5 VQ
5 AQ with True HD (LOSSLESS)

and awesome supplements. Too bad again the cheaper better quality format (as of now) lost.
