Help with DSL Gateway/Modem/Router

I have AT&T DSL, and our 2wire gateway died. I need to get a replacement, but I don't want to have to pay AT&T for their equipment. I was told that I can only use certain types of DSL Modems (Brands) with AT&T....is that true? I've always been under the impression that I can use any kind brand of modem/router so long as it's DSL.

I'm going to head out to Best Buy later tonight to see what I can find, but I don't want to be tricked into buying something super expensive, when i can buy something cheaper that would work just as well, if not better. I'm only going to best buy because it's the closest electronic store to me, and I need internet connection at home soon.

Any suggestions/help/advice is greatly appreciated.
