Default Help me...Easy Ways to boost speed/clean up

My Computer is really bogging down lately....

I'm getting a lot of script issues, choppy you tube clips, occasional freezing, inability to properly shutdown, etc etc.

Can someone give me a couple of easy steps I can take to streamline my computer and get it working semi-functionally again?

    Thanks in advance.

Software, free spyware removal, anti virus software, Software Downloads, computer security, Free Software Download - Viewing SPYBOT Search & Destroy

run that software and it'll clean most of the junk out.

    update video card drivers.

    uninstall any unused softwares.

    disfragment the HD.

My Computer-right click,, properties,, Advanced,, in performance click Settings adn choose Adjust for best performance.

I hope this works for you, Hipcheck, but I've never found anything that worked better than scrubbing the hard drive and re-installing s/w.

This is why I'm religious about keeping my user-generated files on a seperate physical drive than my aplications. I either have a 2nd HD or a USB drive .... and I do my backups online (Mozy).

    Exactly.

I've recently re-installed XP after several years and it's like night and day. I never had the courage to kill all the unnecessary programs and all the junk and always said to myself "well, maybe it'll be useful someday". But now that it's all gone, it's amazing to see how few programs I actually use.
Of course only advisable if you can save all your data and are willing to re-install some programs. But again, I always rejected this too...now I'm a believer

Another vote for backing up your data, formatting the hard drive, re-installing the operating system, and re-installing your programs and applications.

Also make sure to go to the manufacturer's website and download the latest drivers and firmware for the computer.
And thats how you get ants!

When backing up data....is that simply copying and pasting the relevant data to an external HD?

Yes that is one way of doing it.

you can also run the back up wizard from the Windows system tools menu (Start button >> programs >> Accessories >> system tools >> backup) and you can back up the documents and settings to a secondary drive or online.

The operating system [for me: Windows Vista] + applications [for me: MS Office, Kaspersky anti-virus, MatLab, BeyondCompare (file comparison), EditPadPro (test editor) .... and that's about it]. Like Deadmarsh28 said: we really don't use much!

If you choose to go the wipe the drive method, be sure to deauthorize / deactivate any software you might have on the current machine. Apple (iTunes) and Adobe are the big ones on this, but it isn't a bad idea to check around before you do. Also be sure you get any license codes you might need.
