I want to root my HTC inspire. What current ROMS do you recommend? If I've paid for anything in the apps store, will I lose that stuff?

You won't lose anything you've downloaded from the app store. you log into your Google account just like you would with a new phone and everything you've downloaded previously from the market will be there.

As for ROM's it's hard to say. i'm not familiar with the phone. I'd recommend AOKP, CM9 or MIUI. They are the most stable I've used on my Gnex and have a great development community.

I just purchased a S3 and I am completely new to smart phones. I have downloaded a bunch of apps, but I need your opinions of rooting my phone. Should I root it, what are the advantages and will I loose my warranty? What apps do you people recommend? I also need a recommendation on a back up app, preferably for free.

    Thanks,
    Homer

I would not root my phone if this is your first smartphone. Wait until you are more comfortable with the device before you root. You will void the warranty if they catch you. You can always put it back in the stock ROM if you need to take it back. If you you brick" while rooting you are screwed.
the SII has Near Field Communication(NFC) take a loo at the SONY Smart Tags, far superior to the Samusung TechTiles. Let me know I have a few I can spare if you're interested.

    Apps I use everyday...

Color Notes- to keep notes and lists
BOX- for cloud storage. With a SONY device you get 50GB FREE everyone else gets 5 free
    Astro File- for file management
MP3 Download PRO- to download free music

Its not free and the ONLY APP I have ever paid for. Touchdown by Nitrodesk- for my Corp. email. Does a far better job that the stock email app. Free for 30 days and 19.99 after that. I use it on my phone and tablets for 10.00 per device

The S3 has a locked bootloader, at this point rooting it isn't as easy as say a Nexus and isn't quite worth it yet. Wait a few months, read up on the pro's and con's of rooting and get comfortable with possibly having to flash stock image if/when you screw up. There is an outlook web mobile for $4.99. I'm not sure if that's what you're looking for but seems a little expensive for an app.

Not to hijack the thread but...

Other than to steal software, cell service, movies and music, why would you need to root a phone?

In other words, what LEGAL reason would you need to root a phone?

Drice to get rid of the crap the carriers put on it. to make it faster, smoother and free up storage space. There are some feature the carriers block, like tethering, that can also be accessed once you get rid of the carrier software. You get free music software and movies without Rooting. everyone I know download free music on android.
