Default I need help regarding cell phone data plans!

I've had a normal cell phone for years and am finally making the jump to an iPhone. (Yes, I'm willing to pay the money). My contract with Verizon is way past so I can go with any carrier. I'm probably looking to either jump to Sprint or stay with Verizon.

Question: for normal to moderate data users how much data would my g/f and I need for our plan? I've been told that unlimited data is unnecessary and that most people can get away with X number of GBs instead of paying the extra money for "unlimited." Is this accurate?

I'm going to sign up in a day or two but can't figure out if I need 2GBs or 4 or 8, or the unlimited. Any help is greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Sumi

normal use is under 2GB unless you stream slacker, Pandora or movies. If you dont you'll be fine with 2GB if you do you'll need at least 4. If you do I would start with 8, see what you actual usage is and adjust after one full month. You can move or down w/o any penalties as long as you keep a data plan.

BTW the S3 is a better phone that the iphone. most androids after 2010 are better than the iphone5 spec wise. the people who them arent as cool and thats more important to most

'Better' is such a subjective word.

The wife and I both have iPhones and this past year we never exceeded 2GB on a billing cycle. Some months we didn't even get to 1GB total data. But keep in mind that almost everywhere we go there is Wifi (work, home, vacation spots).

I just looked this up last night because we are still grandfathered into the 'unlimited data' plan and they keep begging me to change it. Both my voice and data plans are so old it would cost me another $20 a month just to move to AT&T's cheapest new plan. Now I know why they keep begging me to change!

I don't think there is such a thing as unlimited data, anymore. At least with Verizon, it's all tiered. I'm ordering the new iPhone (my contract is up) and I'm losing my unlimited. Going with the 4 GB for two phones for $150. I'd check the 4G maps for both carriers to see if you are in those areas.

As for the phones, I've had Android phones and love them. The iPhone just fits my needs better. I like iOS more, and feel it's more stable. It works flawlessly with my mac and appletv.

    Good Luck with your decision.

I'm with Verizon now, which you stated has tiered data. But Sprint has unlimited for $140 and I'm considering the jump to them.

Just because it's unlimited doesn't necessarily make it a better option. Verizon IMHO has the most stable and claim to have the largest 4G network of any carrier. I'd pay a few extra bucks for a more stable network any day.

I don't know what the hype is with the new iphone. I'ts a longer 4S. I mean it can't even do voice and data at the same time, which pretty much every new Android can do. It's a step back if you ask me.

Does anybody know which carrier you can use overseas.
I know AT&T and Verizon don't work but I remember reading somewhere that 2 US carriers can be used worldwide.

ATT and Verizon recently created an overseas plan. ATT and Tmobile phones will definitely work overseas (simple SIM swap) and I believe Verizon phones that have LTE can be used overseas.

I'm slowly realizing that I don't need unlimited data. I've polled all my friends at work and it seems, knowing my traits, that I'll only need about 2GBs. I'll likely stay with Verizon, as well as, claim my corporate discount (17%).

I realize iPhone v. Android is purely subjective. I nearly pulled the trigger on a Galaxy S3 but after going over all the specs I decided I'll just do the iPhone. I've never had one, so if I don't end up liking it I'll just sell it and get a different phone.
