Thread: Internet connection help please!

You know...I have this same Internet malfunction going on as well...between 9 and 11pm every few nights my Internet gets weird and won't load. I've used my software to remove viruses changed my router, I even got desperate and called cox...I have no clue what the **** is going on...

Try changing your DNS numbers on your router to a static IP of 8.8.8.8 this is a free Google DNS server See if that helps. I have seen this before and it usually is DNS servers being upgraded with the ISP and the servers don't always update your router until it is refreshed of course.

Yes, right at the start I also thought it had something to do with that. But I've tried resetting the router, reconnecting, refreshing...basically everything you can do with that thing.

Besides, my ISP rarely changes anything...I get a new IP once a month, tops, so it's unlikely that they'll change DNS every two days. But that thought might be worth asking my ISP .

From my understanding, this is not a "real" connection problem. Both this Windows network assistant thingy and my WLAN setup program show me that I have connection. Sometimes, when I reconnect to my router, I'm even able to open a website for maybe five seconds before it dies again.

As I said, this is more than strange...I'll probably wait till end of the week until I wave the white flag and kill Windows once more. But maybe some of you gurus still have a breakthrough thought yet to come.

I would just try changing the DNS numbers that they are giving you to the Google ones and see if it helps rather then just resetting your router because they may be having a problem with their servers that they are not aware of. And if they were to change the servers you would never know it unless the upgrade brings new problems similar to what you are experiencing. I know because I am one of those guys that does that for a living.

What is your isp DNS address and I can run some tests on it to see if that is where the problem is.

also of course if it is a DNS issue windows can still report that you have a connection to the internet because you still are connected but naming resolution may not work properly. There is 2 ways of accessing a website IP Address which Windows uses that connection info to see if you are connected while your browser uses a domain name and the DNS server translates that name into the IP address. usually the first thing to go with DNS issues is your IM client. at least in my experience it has.

You can also try opening up a command prompt and resetting TCPIP

CLick on STart > Run and type in CMD, hit Enter

At the command prompt type in....

netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt

Reboot and see if that makes a difference.
