It's a great coffee table accessory for when you want to look up something on the internet while watching TV. If you've got enough disposable cash to own a computer just for that purpose, then it certainly fills that void.

I bought it to replace a netbook that I used around the house to email, browse, and chat with friends.
I have an iMac for the rest of my computing needs. However, the thing I'm most excited about is the path it might be taking. Toshiba recently announced a netbook with a fully functional screen that can detach from the rest of the netbook. I know this is where Apple is heading and I can't wait. I see it replacing the MacBook Air in the future.
Yes, it's a glorified iPod Touch with a faster processor and gorgeous screen. Yes, it lacks a web camera, flash, SD card and a file management system, but this is Apple we're talking about here. Revision A products by Apple are notorious for limited specs. People complain about a lack of this or that functionality, and then BAM!, revision B comes out with said missing functionalities.
Yes, the lack of multitasking kills me after playing with a Nexus One these past few weeks. However, a preview of OS 4.0 has been announced for this Thursday, and I'm sure this will be the main feature.

I played with one today at Best Buy Its a bad ass e-reader if nothing else. Great screen fast response. Odd size and limited apps at this point.
In typical Apple fashion it will be better faster cheaper when v2 comes out and by v4 it will be cheap and full featured

well Taco you lost hd space,speed & power.while reading engadget or gizmodo last night they had an article explaing the differences between the Iphone & Ipad, they both use the same A4 chipset except the Iphone is not overclocked like the Ipad.My gf has a netbook and is super happy with it and while it is not my thing i think it's a way better product than the Ipad.Really what major stuff has apple changed from the og Iphone to the new 3GS,my first and only iphone to date,from what i've read and seen they added copy & paste some speed & power,more hd space.
I'm referring to iPhone OS, not the hardware itself. Save that for the other thread. However, processor, flash memory, 3G, GPS, screen, app store, and OS are a few things that have been modified, increased, or added over the last three revisions.
I was using a Dell netbook with 1.6 Atom and 80gb HD. I don't need the "power" behind the Dell for my needs. The only things I did on that POS was browse, email, YouTube, and music. I can do that on an iPad that has a superior screen and battery life. I was also shopping for an eReader, so for the price I was going to spend plus the money from the Netbook sale exceeded the total price for the iPad.
I'm glad to hear that your gf is super happy with her netbook. That means it meets her needs. I couldn't handle the abysmal screen and two hour battery life.

Im not usually an early adopter, though I am a tech guy. The last version 1 of anything I bought was a SVR-2000 TIVO. That said, I got an iPad on Saturday and love it. I think many computing items are overkill for much of the casual information consumption (and limited "production") that the vast majority of people are involved in, I think it fills that niche very well. Also for those people with limited technological capacity (again, the majority) it isn't intimidating at all. I never liked laptops, hot, heavy and cramped. I've had various internet only device, small, cramped, slow and limited functionality, good in a pinch but not what you would use for most of your internet needs. I'll use my desktop for the heavy lifting (i.e. real work) and the iPad for everything else with it able to fill the gaps in a pinch if I need to VPN in and reboot a server or run a SQL command.
You all know me as an Apple Geek, and I'm buying one for this very reason. It will sit on the coffee table, and its availability there will keep everyone's grubby hands off my MacBook Pro when they want to look up stuff on the Internet while they are watching random crap on TV.Originally Posted by TonySCV
