Hah! Awesome! And topical in more ways than one, no less!

I do have one little problem with it, however...

I appreciate the setup on this pic. I can totally see the guy drinking his beer, watching the Kings let another goal in, and chucking his beer at the picture knocking it to the floor in shattered pieces. Great setup!

    LGK Photo Challenge #1: "Glass"

    OK, here goes.

A few different looks at my favorite scotch tumbler:

tried to catch the back of that cut Florette through the rim...

(this one had a touch of fiddling...)

And the rim of the glass, natural style.

A quick rundown: basically the glass and camera were both hand-held, and I shot from f2.0-4.0, with shutter speeds between 1/30 and 1/800 (up to 1/2000 for a handful of others not shown here--and before my battery croaked ). ISO was 100. All untouched except #3.

    ***

Now that I've posted..... I'm far from "critiquing" anyone, but I can say that all of your pics have stuck in my mind from the first viewing and I'm looking forward to giving individual props when I'm not as tired as tonight.... but some truly inspired--and inspiring images. Thanks for sharing!

    ***

    (Moved images from 1/17/08):

I may get some straight photos in here eventually... but I'm REALLY digging this Olympus 50mm macro, so please bare with me while I have little fun with the theme.

This hand-cut saké glass was a humbling gift from someone close, and I just put a little colored light to it. The resulting images look a bit other-worldly but are completely untouched. Hope you like 'em.

Get ready to run for your life.... these first two dudes are the GlassBots. RESISTANCE.....IS.....FUTILE:

Here's the web cut into the bottom of the glass. Really dug the way it caught the light, color, and texture:

And a little love for the artist (or company, maybe? I'll have to ask):

    ***

    1/20 additions:

Playing around with some glass-themed household items... and trying to keep the background in mind this time.

Two slightly different photos of this prism, which is about the size of a Kalamata olive:

    Kind of an odd ball:

And two different looks at this little jar:

The prism shots were cropped and this last kinda sci-fi lookin one was tweaked a little, but that's about it.

    ***

    1/22/08:

During dinner I liked the way the lights reflected in and through the green glass of the bottle...

We have basic halogen flood bulbs in our living room recessed cans, and the glass looks cool on those. Here's a few hand-held shots standing under and pointing up at one. I tried a number of different angles and exposures and with the lights bright and dim, and liked these the best. Kinda Aztec lookin'.

This last one was where I finally dragged the tripod over and cranked that sucker as high as it could go. Most of those were a bit blown out (and I was too tired to keep playing), but the sharpness was definitely better. Here's a kind of solar-trippy crop.

    OVB,

Those are outstanding! I like the cobalt-blue color! The lighting in the first one is excellent, giving the image a three-dimensional feel. The same feeling is given by pic #2 but for a completely different reason (the parts of the glass in front of the focal plain are out-of-focus, while that one half-in-shadow star is in near-perfect focus) that gives a real feel of "looking through something solid."

    Great stuff!

Nice shots, OVB. I really like #1 and #3. I think Glenn is right that the lighting in #1 really helps to define the shape. I think #4 doesn't work for me as much because I find the background somewhat distracting, perhaps if it where completely blown out? Great work!

Tooting my own horn a bit here, but that image made Flickr's 500 Most Interesting photos for January 15, 2008.

    http://www.flickr.com/explore/interesting/2008/01/15/

    Page #7.

Crazy to me, really, as I didn't even think that was one of the best pics I took yesterday. I sure as hell don't think it hangs with most of the other stuff in that list.

But whatever. Props is props, I guess!

Have been watching this thread and the pics being submitted. In a word, all are AWESOME...Excellent job by everybody involved.

On that note..My submission is totally woeful compared to the current ones. However, still working on it. I hope to have more creative or inspiring pics to follow.

Glass container filled with pistachios. Small light behind it. Shot with Canon S2 IS, f/2.7, 1/2 sec. exposure time, hand held, no flash. Bumped up contrast a bit in PSP and resized.

Keep up the great work guys. And hopefully some of it will rub off on me..LOL.

Congrats FBJ on the flickr list....Great job!

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ok..Took a few more. Still working on lighting and composition. Still pretty sucky compared to the great shots already posted. But getting there. Found some more interesting subjects. Basically just 3 shots of the sam antique serving dish.

Taken with ambient flourescent lighting. Not sure of the f stop and eposure time...

Same dish, just eperimenting. Hand held, no flash. Flourescent lighting...

Different location. Same lighting, no flash.

Close up, on it's side. Same lighting (Gonna have to work on that..Flourescent sucks..LOL).

All shots normal except for a bit of contrast tweaking in PSP..And resizing...

Have some ideas for lighting, and a couple of more colorful subjects....Having fun, even though I'm outclassed by a long shot.

Thanks for the input, guys. Glad you like 'em! Not exactly histogramically correct but I liked the outcome. I agree about the 4th one, ValleyFan. I wasn't really thinking about the background, but I'm pretty sure at some point I'll shoot that glass again and will be more deliberate and conscientious. Maybe even a little Campari or cranberry juice inside or something??

btw, I loved your second shot, the pitcher set with the grayish background. VERY well done!

FBJ.... that shot that made the flickr list is SMOKING good. Wow. True, there are some good ones in that group but yours holds it's own easily. ****ing NICE. And the "fire in the tube" shot reminds me of the "Eye" in LOTR. Very well done. You gotz skillz, boy!!

Rinkrat, I really dig the streaking lights shot. That was hand-held? Man, the "broadway" in teh sign is amazingly crisp. It looks like a professional shot.

Speaking of professional, Puckmonkey is off the friggin hook. All fantastic, but that "Tonga 3" with the red light between the two trees is incredible. What an effect. I bet Belvedere would love that. Consider me big fan.
