I haven't been pleased with any Toshiba hardware since VCR's were the standard. That's why I refuse to buy their products anymore. If I do need to get HD-DVD in the near future, i'll get a player made from another company.
That might be a problem - Toshiba has submarined the format so much that no other company can profit from it. Onkyo is going to release a higher priced player, but it's going to be a rebadged Toshiba. The only confirmed independent manufacturer will be a budget player from a company called Venturer or something like that, and I would be VERY cautious with a budget player from either format with technical details being what they are.
The funny thing about VHS vs Beta is that Beta is still being used today. Sure, you have a few shmows watching movies on VHS still, but digital Beta tapes are being used in professional facilities and are a big part of the film/video industry.
A-2 HD-DVDs are being discounted to $100 at Wallyworld and Bestbuy.
Link? I had heard $200, with around $160 confirmed at one retailer for Black Friday only.
This does prove one thing . . . Toshiba hadn't sold anywhere NEAR the number they have expected at this point. The A3 (the replacement for the A2) is already out, and yet they've shipped massive amounts of A2s out in the last couple of weeks.
BTW . . . I'm not much for style . . . but I would pay an extra $100 for the A3 over the A2 on looks alone. The A2 looks like a VCR from the 80s.
