Fill me in on the AVS drama, please!
Well, it was their own undoing. They created their forums to design some kind of "smack down" for the war. However, their mods were all firmly planted on one side (HD DVD), so what was happening is that people were posting absolute lies and myths about the formats, and only one side was getting censored. This lead to a parade of people over to a Blu-ray only site (I don't know the name, but it might be just bluray.com) and they declared war on AVS, an invasion took place, and the fur started to fly.
Apparently it came down to actual personal threats of injury in a few cases. Absolutely lunacy type stuff.
The real problem with this format battle was having both XBox and the PS3 on each side. Those two "groups" have already been a decisive bunch for many years. Factor in the age group (usually quite young) and it adds a very unsavory element.
I've said for a while that individually, lower prices for these formats is great. However, I think it's hurt the PR part, as its influxed a bunch of jackasses into an early development of a new technology that shouldn't even be in this war until it was settled.
just an an FYI-- My A2 died (No Disc) 30 minutes into watching SD-DVD Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.
It was shipped out to Toshiba Depot Service on Thursday.
Man, I wish I had it a week. It arrived on the 12th, when I was in Pittsburgh. I arrived home on the 13th, and took it out of the box on the 14th, and shipped it back to Toshiba on the 15th.
I will say the call to Toshiba was pleasurable. I have a hunch I have a bad drive.
The addition of the HDDVD player has caused me to lose my 16 year old JVC 7 disc CD changer. It no longer fits on the shelf, and I don't want it on the bottom. To compensate, I just picked up a Sony SCD-CE595 SACD 5 disc player.
Of course, I hooked up the optical to the receiver, and I only have 3 digital inputs. They are used by the STB, CD, and HDDVD. If Santa gets me a Blu-Ray player, what ever shall I do????
Hint - It starts with Onk and ends with 05.![]()
I still haven't decided if upconverting all to 720p/1080i is a MUST have for me. Notice I left off 1080p, since I have 720p television that doesn't support 1080p inputs (JVC 52" D-ILA). That is also why I decided on grabbing an A2 for $109.
I am more interested in the the HDMI Input. I think I need at least 3 HDMI in the new receiver, HDDVD/BD/STB. Passing through should be okay.
Also, I would have to investigate the upconverting chips to decide which way to go, and $1,500 may be a bit steep.

The 3 HDMI inputs are the reason I went with the 4306. (At the time, it was the only 3 in available.)
And as far as cost, I fully understand. When I bought the Denon back in 2/06, I paid $1800 for it. The upscaling chip inside is great. I love being able to run only TWO HDMI cables to my 1080p AQUOS: one from the Denon and one from the DirecTV HR-720. The video-only HDMI input on the TV handles the Denon output, while the audio and video HDMI handles the DVR. This way, the wife doesn't need to turn on EVERYTHING to watch Dancing With the Stars.
What were we talking about again?![]()
