the numbers is the passcode that you set up, encrypted. Depending on the type of password you set up (64 bit, 128 bit encryption... etc.) those "numbers" are your password. So, if you get another laptop, or someone else to use your WiFi... you have to give them those numbers in order to access... not the password you set up. It keeps things easier to secure.
BTW -- it should be numbers AND letters... right? i.e. -

EDIT: Okay... so after reading my post I made no sense. Basically it works like this... it asks you for a password, you give it one that you choose, then it converts the password into WEP keys... essentially, every word can have a different key. When wanting to access your WiFi, you want to provide the WEP key, not the word that you supplied. Okay? Okay.
