Default LGK Photography Challenge #1 (Shape)

Welcome all to the "official" LGK Photo Challenge for the month of August.

The theme this month is going to be "Shape(s)". Basically, show us a photo of something with a shape. Any kind you like. Very simple and also wide-ranging. Maybe you want to use the arch of a bridge. Maybe the curve of a road. It's really up to you and there are no wrong answers here. Try and be creative and try new things. Don't be shy or afraid. The idea here is to share with other like-minded folks and maybe give them some ideas and/or help for the future. This challenge will go until the end of the month (Aug. 31st) and you should only use photos you've taken within that time frame.

At this point in time I don't have any thoughts about judging or voting, but if you guys want to do that, by all means we can. Mostly just try and have fun and give yourself an excuse to get out and do some shooting. So, here's what I'd like people to do. Keep in mind, this is all optional. Fill out as much or as little as you like.

Description: Give us a brief description of what the photograph is of. Where did you take it at? What time of day was it? What IS it? In some cases that might not be so obvious. Fell free to give location information as well for people who might want to go and see where/what you shot.

Technical Settings: How did you shoot the photograph? Was there any setup involved in it (lighting or something like that)? What sort of speeds and/or filters did you use? What sort of weather were you looking for/hoping for/ended up getting? Basically, anything you feel could help others understand what you did to get the shot.

Inspiration or any other information: Was there a reason you chose this angle or subject? Is this something you've shot before or a favorite of yours? Some place or thing you've thought about shooting before?

With all that being said, feel free to let others know about this too. Doesn't have to be confined to the 3-5 of us who "regularly" visit this sub-forum. Full-frame, P&S, iPhone, whatever. An interesting photo is an interesting photo. We all learned on something other than a fancy camera at first. So, there you all have it. An assignment for the month. Let's get to shooting!

Sooooooooo...basically a photo of anything, then?

Sorry to sound obtuse here, but in my opinion, this theme is far too generalized. Everything has a shape. There's no "looking with the photographer's eye" required to find subjects with "any kind [of shape] you like."
Anything worth shooting is worth shooting twice. Bullets are cheap. Life is priceless.

Jezz dude, give it a chance. Now I remember why most peeps got scared off during our first round of challenges back in the day...too many requirements. The key to any great photograph isn't always how complex the subject matter is, its how the subject is conveyed to the viewer. That's rule 1 in the Photog 101 book. Use your imagination. This subject has limitless boundries that everyone can take advantage of.

    Two things.

One, the reason I gave something as open ended as this was to encourage as much participation as possible. The idea for this one was to get people up and out and doing something they find interesting. Saying, "Moody Portrait" or "Sunrise at the Beach" might not be interesting to someone who doesn't do that sort of thing. We can narrow it down and be more concise as they go along. This is the first one of (hopefully) many.

Two, if I were to put a photo here of a guy taking a shot on net and the goalie about to save/not save it, it's not really a shape. The shape should be the focus of the picture, not an incidental aspect of it. Be creative. Use some interesting lighting to accentuate the shape of something. A curve, an arch, an angle, a box, anything. This one is more of a technical challenge than a "make me weep with emotion" type one. That's not to say they can't or won't be both, but the idea here is to do something cool and fun with an object or area instead of a classic "subject" or landscape.

Ultimately though, I don't expect everyone will enjoy or be motivated by all of them. There's no rule that if you don't participate in all of them then you can't participate in any of them. If this one (or a future one) isn't of interest to you or a dozen people, that's cool. You don't have to involve yourself in this or any other one. Find one that sounds fun to you and contribute.

Which is the issue I was having with it.

I'm not trying to be a dick or wreck anyone's fun with this. Far from it. I hope it's fun for everyone, and I'm hoping to find some time to get out there with my cameras again.

In planning these things, I think theme selection cuts both ways. Too narrow a theme keeps many would-be participants from being able to get to places where there are subjects that fit the theme. Too broad and there isn't any cohesiveness within the submissions...no ability to see how different photographers capture similar subjects (which, to me, spurs each other's creativity).

From the link that DRice provided...a few like I was envisioning:

Now, these are just examples but there is a clear "shape" that you're seeing. Again, there's no right or wrong here either.
