My girlfriends dad picked up a pretty decent Compaq at Best Buy for under 500.
they have an AMD dual core Dell Inspiron build at Best Buy that was on sale for around $400. I just bought one for the in-laws.
I recently bought a little netbook. After popping Ubuntu netbook remix on there, the little sucker flies. Sure it's not great but for $200, 7hrs of battery life seems like it was well worth it.
Chu, you're hot. for $499.99, I'll give you a lap dance you will never forget.
