The way TV Prices are falling, you are better off buying the CHEAPEST 1080p television that you can live with. Use the difference between the one you want and the cheapest to take you parents out to dinner or vice-versa, for a MONTH. 3 years later, move the cheap TV into the bed room and upgrade to a larger TV for the family room. Rinse and repeat for a decade and you'll have large HD 1080p Flat Panel TVs in every room for around a $7500 dollar total investment, or $750/yr, or $65/mo.
I like Westinghouse for cheap, I love Sharp for quality, but if I was going to buy a family room TV I'd look at the cheapest plasma if it's affordable. If I have too much money, then I'd just go to a high end video store and tell them to hook you up.

i used the thx calibration thing for my sister's tv and my tv and i think its pretty good. i think i used the one on the Incredibles dvd. i've also used AVE. AVE is not that expensive (~$20), so i'd just pick that up and try it out.Quote:

I've lent it to a few friends that didn't know anything about calibration and they loved the results.
Keep in mind, most of these are still 3x4 SD dvd's, but they do the job fine.
Also look for Bars and Tone that air infrequently on PBS, MOJO and HDnet. I wouldn't reccomend the FSN-HD Bars and Tone though.

Oh, I've waited over a year to do this, and saved up 2 birthdays, one Xmas, and the wife got to redo the hardwood floors in the process, so I've got enough chips saved up here to do this RIGHT. No I don't want to blow a ton of coin just to blow it, but at the same time, I've always been one to overpay for quality.

Some of the users are a little snoddy, but you're going to hear and know every little detail and flaw and area where a TV line excels in.
I'm not really a fan of plasmas because every one I look at looks like it has a grainy filter on it and you really have to pay out your ass for the upper end ones(moreso than other types of HDTV).
I like DLP's because you get more screen size for the buck and the response time is thousands of times faster than LCD, but they have bulb life problems and with some lines their frames aren't built sturdy enough and the screens will bow.
I really like LCD's because it's expanding on what is now a really tried and true tech, but their response time is often 8ms, which creates strobing and some of their black levels aren't very deep(some offset this by crushing colors like shadows to black, but sometimes this can be bad).
I'm really tempted for the Samsung LN-T4665f or the LN-T4671f right now, but I need to pay off student loans first.
That tv is only 720p. Since you want to do it right, I would only look at 1080p models.
As Las said, go avs & search for the model you're thinking of to see what others are saying.
