I concur with KK, I have tried to install MAME on two different computers and I could never get it right.
I did find this site:
http://www.retrouprising.com/
which has a lot of great games I played as a kid. Its great at work too.

Mash, I found this page on the MAME site for the initial set up, I read it over and it sounds pretty simple, but haven't had the chance to give it a try.

Was playing MAME last night...funny to run into this post. I have a HotRod Joystick hooked up to the 37" LCD...good stuff.
Most Played:
The Simpsons
TMNT
Contra
Sunset Riders
Mrs. PacMan
Street Fighter 2
Mortal Combat
Pit Fighter (ol skool)
1943
Ikari Warriors
Micky Thompson's Offroad
Double Dragon
Toobin
Super Sprint
If anyone needs some help with MAME...I can be of assistance.
The reason I got into MAME is because I wanted to try playing those games now that I'm older to see if I'm any better at them.
Some of my faves:

Of course I also like the classics like Donkey Kong, Frogger, Pac-Man, Robotron, Donkey Kong Jr., and Centipede.
If you want to really get into the whole emulator thing, look at the Daphne Emulator. It is a laser disc emulator that can play Dragon's Lair and Space Ace - and the other laser disc games that came out. It took some tinkering to get working and you have to find a copy of the laser disc content, but once you do it is damn fun to play those games.
I love it for the mere fact I can get EVERY NEO GEO GAME KNOWN TO MAN!!!!!
When I was a kid, probably put THOUSANDS of dollars in quarters playing their games.
I need to take a picture of my friend's setup. He has a 4 person console thingy set up. We get together and play Ninja Turtles or Simpsons or any other great 4 player games.
Think about what, Hip? The fact that our kids are closer to our ages when we played these games than we are? ;)
Rip Off RULES!!!
I also dig:
Star Castle (Though my ROM for it hasn't worked in a while.)
Phoenix (Same issue as Star Castle)
Gorf
Download Mame32 from this link:
http://www.emulator-zone.com/doc.php/arcade/mame.html
You then put your roms (games) into the Rom folder. Double click on Mame32 and you're good to go.
Any good free ROM sites?
