To be fair, the Onkyo does have one feature that the Pioneer doesn't, and that's Audio Return Channel. (ARC). This allows a TV to stream its own tuner's program audio backwards via its HDMI connection instead of having a sepate composite or digital connection. I don't use my TV's tuner, so it's not an issue for me.

while my Yamaha is not 1.4 compliant, I have had zero issues with it over the last 3 years (man, it's been 3 years already?!?!?!?!). I still love my RX-V3800, so I am not in the market.

What I will say is to find a few AVR that meets your required specifications, then find some brick and mortar shops to listen to them. Find the one that sounds best to you, and then start looking for the best price (make sure it is from an authorized dealer, just in case something goes wrong).

just be sure the receiver is off before connecting the speakers!!!

I failed on that part and lost my beloved Onkyo. :(
I BELIEVE I'll have another beer!

yeah, back in my big pimpin single days, I would have bought that. now my balls are in a jar and the money is better put towards kid's education or something like that ;-).

I just wish this B&K receiver was up to date.

and wait, those kids should be smart enough to get some kind of scholarships, right? ha!

One nice feature that it shares with high-end equipment is modular construction, which allows for future upgrades and simplified maintenance:
