Default In the market for a new Receiver

my B&K is now 10 years old and as amazing as this 6.1 system has been, it doesn't have HDMI input/outputs.

anyone have an HDMI 1.4 compatible receiver that they would highly recommend with pricing/place to buy it?

I've been out of the receiver game for a while, but I love my Marantz (got it about 2 years ago). I've also heard great things about Onkyo. I'll try to do some research and get back to you.

Take a LONG look at the Pioneer VSX-1020. One of the best bang-for-the-buck AV Recs out there I think. I bought one for myself for Christmas to kick my three year old Onkyo to the bedroom. I've been using it pretty hard for a full week now with no major complaints. 5 HDMI inputs in the back, one in the front for good measure. A great on-screen set-up, and a far better auto calibration than my previous Onkyo. (Takes a little longer, too.) It also has a great iPod integration ability - full function with the receiver, and it also will display song info and album art on screen. And unlike a lot of others with this features, the necessary cable is included.

If I was forced to come up with complaints - I'll list two.

    1) HDMI handshaking - while the audio is instant and quicker than my Onkyo, the video sometimes lags for a second of two before popping up.

    2) The front door to access the iPod control/front HDMI/headphone jacks is a cheap plastic snap-off door that will just beg to be lost. No idea why they couldn't put on simple flip-down door or something like that.

    3) No S-Video - for 99% of users, no longer a big deal. I have an old DirecTV/TiVo unit that has no component outputs, so S-Video is the best video output available. Since my TV has one, it's no big deal to just route the video direct to the TV and use the amp for just the audio, but I've been very impressed with the video upscaling the 1020 does, and I think I would see improvements having it run through it.

Currently it's $360 on Amazon, which is what I paid about four weeks ago.

probably 400-1000 - I don't really know what I want other than HDMI 1.4 and a bunch of HDMI inputs, and maybe some optical inputs and a composite input for some legacy cables I have (PS3, Wii), otherwise, I don't know squat about newer DSP technologies.

I haven't yet made the jump to an A/V receiver, but I know from experience with my NAD 3020 integrated amp (had it since the early '80s and it still sounds good; it's one of Stereophile magazine's all-time top 25 products) that the in-house design philosophy is to put the effort into the unit's performance and leave out the bells and whistles.

This manufacturer has gotten significant press for their value/$ from their inception, and when I make the move, this is where I'll start looking.

    Good luck with your upgrade.

thanks - will definitely keep this in mind and will check to see when it becomes 1.4 compliant.

I am SUPER happy with that receiver. I've owned nothing but Onkyo gear since the early 90's, and have had absolutely zero issues.

Composite . . . . I'm hoping you meant PS2 and not PS3. If you're not running your PS3 in HD, you're missing out on 90% of the fun. Or did you mean component?

As for Onkyo, I have had good luck with mine as well but I do have a major complaint - MAN can they run hot on even moderate use. I'm fortunate enough to have a wide berth and open cabinet for it to breathe in. I'd be worried about long term use in any enclosed space.
