Default Microsoft will have to pull Office 2003 and 2007 Off the Shelves

Microsoft will have to pull Office 2003 and 2007 off the shelves along with Word 2003 and 2007 until Microsoft can redesign the software without the XML document format in a Patent violation.

Microsoft said this could prevent them for selling their # 1 selling product for many months.

This is going to lead to 2 things that can happen. People will either start having to install Open Office or start Pirating office on new computers until the issue has been dealt with. IMO this is a blessing for the Open Office project. With the current version being able to open and edit office 2007 formats.

I just wish OpenOffice ran Excel scripts correctly. I had to get MS Office at work for a few machines because some software we had wouldn't work on OO.

edit: Macros, not scripts. I meant to type macros.

Word on the street is MS has already fixed this issue and is in the process of getting a new SKU number for the new version of Office. They'll have a new compliant version ready for resale before they have to pull the older version.
And thats how you get ants!

From what I heard Microsoft was already planning on abandoning the DOCX format for 2010. I am still hoping that they have to take the software off the shelf for a little bit, but we will see.

Reading the latest on this issue Microsoft has appealed the judgment against them and the court has accepted the appeal. as of right now. If Microsoft loses the appeal they will have to remove the software as of Oct 10th. Unless they fix the issue and get it distributed before then.
