Still not sure which way to go....I am concerned with the overall short life span of laptops. I bought my current Dell in 2005 and plan to let the kids use it for Club Penguin solely when I get my new rig.

If you need the power of a desktop, then there's really no reason to choose. Heavy gaming, video editting, etc. can't be done on even a solid laptop without complications.
If you're looking for just a regular computer experience (surfing, word processing, etc.) then it's all a matter of convience. I spent probably less than two hours a week on my desktop now, even though it's the fastest rig in my house. (The PS3 takes some credit for this, as I've become more of a consule gamer now compared to a PC gamer). My wife and I each have our laptops in the living room all the time. Sometimes when she's not paying attention to what I'm saying (Go Get me a sandwich!) I have to facebook chat her for it to register. For most tasks, being able to do them right in front of our 58" TV makes it a simple decision for me. It will be a while before I replace my desktop, and I most certainly won't put a huge chunk of change in its replacement.
Don't cheap out on a laptop, though. Max out the RAM, get a dedicated Video card (and sound to if that's important). Take a look at the processor speeds and get something decent to. There are some mobile chips out there that advertise great battery life, but what they really should be saying is "under powered."
Whoever said a laptop only lasts 2-3 years is full of it. Thats the lifecycle for a laptop at a corporation, but not for a home user. Buy the laptop direct from either Dell or HP, and get an extended warranty on it for 4-5 years. Once the warranty is up, you will be wanting to look at getting a new computer. I use both my desktop and laptop quite a bit. If its going to be for business, I would suggest a laptop. If its for home use and entertainment, i would suggest a desktop.

Not a gamer, not a video editor, sadly as much as I love to play guitar and sing I dont even have time to do that these days as much as I would like. With that said, we do just basic computer stuff. Hell I would use my current computer ito the day it dropped dead if not for annoyance factor that is the video issues with youtube and the occasional freezing.
If I go the laptop route does the "Buy Dell Business Class Computers" rule of thumb still apply?
If you go to the Dell website they will help you choose the laptop that is best for all the things you want to do. Choices of upgrades etc. I found it very helpful.

Ive been rocking laptops only now for about 12 years. Love the freedom. All my external devices are wireless. I sit on the deck, overlooking the river with a cup of joe and read email every Saturday morning.
The last 2 laptops Ive owned have been Gateways. Awesome computer with a great monitor. The one Im using right now is 5 years old and still going.
If you want a lap top I would suggest this model.

I think it depends on what you do for a living. If you spend all day at a desk in front of one or two big monitors processing data, the laptop/netbook will feel like a different experience and a vacation from work.
Honestly, netbooks, is what you should be getting.
I considered that but thought more memory and functionality of a full blown laptop would be a better long term investment.Quote:
