Not really, it just depends on what channels you want to watch. If you want to watch all your cable box channels then yes you need to put the Sling box in between your cablebox and PC. If you just want to watch the basic channels available w/o the box like I do, then you just need to plug the cable from the wall into the Slingbox. If you go to the Slingbox site it will show all the different hookup diagrams.

When you say basic channels, did you mean only a certain channels you selected to watch? Or the basic channels package from the cable distributor?
