Default Nook color vs kindle 3g

I'm thinking about getting one of these E-Readers for my GFs b-day next month. Hoping to get some feedback from people who have used either one.

Both have great reviews, so I guess it'll come down to 'ink'/black and white screen on the Kindle and the LCD color screen of the Nook. My GF loves reading magazines and the Nook seems to have the advantage for this use. Looks like the Kindle is more for hardcore readers of novels.

Any Nook owners out there? If so, how's the screen look if you're outside in the sun? Is there a glare?

    Any feedback is appreciated.

I know the Nook color can be hacked into being an Android tablet. I've been wanting to get one just for that reason.

With the Nook you can also check out books from the library, most other readers except the Kindle will let you do that now.

I have a nook color and it is awesome. My GF's mother has a Kindle 3g and it is awesome. If you get the Kindle get the 3g, it's the only way. The Nook is sweet because you can surf the web etc, and apparently in the next couple months it is going to be updated to make better use of PDF files and allow creation of apps.

Thanks for the response. Would the Nook update you're talking about be something you can upgrade with a download, or would you have to buy a new unit with this capability?

I have the Kindle and love it. When I was deciding, I was going through the same dilemma you were. I think it all comes down to what you're looking for in a reader. Like you said, if it's for novels, I think the Kindle is great. Anything with color, a Nook is better. But a Nook is an LCD screen so battery life is shorter and it's not as easy on the eyes as the Kindle.

Kindle has no color but has the DX if you want a bigger screen. If your girlfriend's primary reason for a reader is for magazines, a Nook would be better between the two (although, an iPad would be awesome because of Zinio, but I hate recommending something else since I feel it's OT)

My wife has a Kindle and loves it. Reads all kinds of free books on it and says the screen is perfect for reading. But if you want magazines, I would expect the color screen to be a better choice.

BoobyTrap has done this to her Nook and it's awesome.

To be honest my GF is the tech person, but it seems that the NOOK updates itself.(It has done so a couple times for me already.) And the guy at B+N said that it was on it's way to being a tablet once it does update. As someone who reads a bunch anyways I cannot get enough of this thing. I love it. I would make love to it if it had a hole. I must have over 2500 pages worth of books on it, and it fits in a medium/large pocket.

Personally if I had to choose I would go with the Nook, but that is only because it seems to have a little more variety in function. It can connect to the web and Pandora, stores music/pictures. You can subscribe to Newspapers/magazines which automatically DL to the Nook the day they are published.

However, the awesomeness of 3g ability on the Kindle is undeniable.

For a reader, I like the e-ink pages of the Kindle since there is little glare vs. the shiny LED screen of the Nook. I bought the 3G Kindle for my wife and she loves it.
